Entanglement dropped their first game at the hands of Marshall Friday night 15-8. In B Division, Disc Jockeys evened their record with a 15-10 win over Flick Tease. Cliqet the piqet of Criqet to read more.

Some say I tend to hyperbolize. Nonsense.

This was the best match-up in sports since the upcoming Superbowl.

Marshall faced Entanglement last night. Both teams entered at 3-0. Marshall has been on a 20-game undefeated regular season streak. And Entanglement (under the former name Gesundheit) were in the finals last year. Of note: these are the only two teams to defeat Empire in tournament play.

Conditions were perfect for a night of Ultimate. Nothing was on TV. Conditions were perfect. (1)

Marshall opened with the disc and struck first blood after a few turns. But Entanglement came right back when old man Landesman sprinted deep for a huck to tie it at 1′s. Entanglement tacked on the next 2 and it was 3-1. But Marshall would not be denied this day. After the teams traded points to 4-2, Marshall reeled off 5 straight to make it 7-4, and then took half 8-5.

Marshall’s hucking game misfired a couple times, but for the most part was dead on. Matt Mihm had a couple deadly deep shots including a gorgeous full field huck to AJ complete with gratuitous layout. AJ in turn hit Tucker on the back line of the end zone on a sideline arc. Even Cubby threw a precision strike to Nicole Copti streaking down the near side. Copti herself got to a stall 9 and then sent a prayer up to Matt Mihm, and the defender appeared to give up on it for an easy score. It was that kind of night.

Marshall opened the second half with two breaks to go up 10-5 and after the teams traded points to 11-7, Marshall ended the game with 4 of 5 to win 15-8. Entanglement was a fast and athletic team, and made some sick plays, but it wasn’t enough to stop Marshall’s now 21 game undefeated streak.

Marshall is 4-0 and goes right into another tough test with AFO (3-0) on Monday. Entanglement is now 3-1 and plays Kong (5-0) on Wednesday in the rematch of last year’s finals. What a week it’s gonna be when you include the Fresh Pots / Retro game in B. Figures this would be the week it’s supposed to rain.

1. Props to FOTC.

In B Division, Disc Jockeys improves their record to 2-2 with a 15-10 win over Flick Tease. I don’t have a recap yet from that game, but I may later today. It’s 9:30 on Saturday morning while I’m writing this (with a hangover I might add) so I didn’t really expect a recap this early.

Disc Jockeys is 2-2 and plays Hucking in Tents (1-4) on Wednesday. The Tease drops to 1-3 and takes on Let’s Get Horizontal (3-1) on Monday.

Monday night’s action:

As mentioned above, Marshall plays AFO in a battle of undefeateds. I mentioned the Marshall 21-game undefeated regular season streak. Well, the only blemish in that streak is the one tie, which came from AFO.

In B, Let’s Get Horizontal looks to regroup after their first loss of the season this week. They’ll play Flick Tease.

Ice Ice Baby put the freeze on The Huck and Chuck Show Thursday night to the tune of 15-6. And in B Division, Fresh Pots stayed undefeated, with a 15-7 win over Leggo My Tractor. (I want to be able to say Fresh Pots doubled up Leggo My Tractor, like they do on Sports Center, but these damn games to 15!)

Click the pic of Ice Ice's Scottish Baby Kate Ashton to read more. (I'm cheating. This picture was from week one. Shhhhhh.)

Somebody had to win, as Snatch reports on Ice Ice Baby’s game against The Huck and Chuck Show:

The night ended with one team getting their first A division win. During the first half, both teams looked ready to fight for the win with the score going to 4s very quickly after some back and forth full field hucks. After that, Ice stepped up their defense and started making stall counts get high and forcing some tough throws by Huck and Chuck. Ice took half 8-5 and ready to keep going being on offence to start the second half. Ice was able to jump out to some fast points and went on an impressive run to bring the game to 14-5. Huck and Chuck, not wanting to go quietly, fought hard on the next point and made it 14-6. In the end, Ice was able to put the game away on a silly looking blade throw and brought home their first win of the season! It really was a full team effort as many people had great Ds and our offence was putting the disc to everyone on the field.

And here’s the view from the other side. This is Hot Sauce of Huck & Chuck:

Ooo goodie, a close game. It started that way. The Huck & Chuck Show and Ice Ice Baby traded points on deep throws and it was all knotted up at 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s. Mr. Spaz himself left his traditional handling position and used his height and disc reading skills to catch a score from Zach Pond. At 6-5 Ice, the H&C Show started making silly drops and couldn’t find the groove all the way down the field. Ice took half. H&C threw a zone for one point, but the handling crew of Ice cut right through it with cross field hammers pretty much the entire length of the field. The H&C Show finally scored one more time, but that would be all for them. Ice’s height was too much for the Show to defend (just how tall is Drew and is there a rule against it?), H&C had silly drops and just couldn’t find the flow that they’d need to get their first win.

Next week will be a battle for ninth place between the Huck & Chuck Show and Tarmac. Tarmac has a 2-0 history against the Huck & Chuck Show, but the point differential gives a nod to H&C. We’ll see.

Look at that. He did my job for me. Thanks man. Ice Ice Baby meanwhile is now 1-3-1 and they’ll play Sky Life (1-2) on Tuesday.

In B Division, the Fresh Pots have not been stopped. Mike Endreola gives the scoop from last night’s game against Leggo My Tractor:

Fresh Pots won 15-7 last night.

Leggo my tractor came out hot with speed and intensity and got the games first 2 point very quickly.

Pots answered back and kept it close getting the score to Leggo 7, Pots 6.

We made some adjustments not just offensively and defensively but also mentally and proceeded to go on a 9-0 run ending the game at 15-7.

So with that late run, the Pots are now 5-0. And they’ll play Retro (3-0) on Tuesday, assuming the weather holds up. I’m nervous. Rain is expected Tuesday, and I hope it holds off for just one more day so we can get this match-up in. If not, both teams might end the season undefeated and it’s been awhile since that’s happened. The last time two teams went undefeated in the same division was 2004 (Plum Sauce and Damn).

Leggo My Tractor drops to 2-2. They’ll play Solidarity (3-2) next week.

Tonight’s action:

For the first time this season, two of the four elite teams in A Division will face off. Marshall (3-0) and Entanglement (3-0) did not see eachother last year when Entanglement was Gesundheit. Their game was rained out. Marshall is currently riding a 20-game regular season undefeated streak. (They last lost to Empire in 2009.)

In B Division, Flick Tease (1-2) and Disc Jockeys (1-2) hook up. Flick Tease got their first win last week.

I was predicting very close games Wednesday night, but unfortunately they didn't quite turn out to be the nail biters I was rooting for. AFO won 15-8 over Sky Life. And Retro beat Let's Get Horizontal 15-10. Click the pic of Retro's Michael Cotter, who apparently plays D a little differently than most of us do.

This was supposed to be the day of down-to-the-wire finishes. And there was ample data to support that theory (cause I’m all scientific). But in the end, the teams you might expect to win… well, they won, and neither game threatened to go to OT.

Let’s start in B Division, where I’ve got two great recaps. Retro played Let’s Get Horizontal and both teams entered the game undefeated. We’ll start with Retro’s Crissy Vega for the report:

Retro came out strong itching to play due to being rained out last week. Our numbers were lower than usual which I think actually helped in the end b/c we didn’t get cold and developed some flow. (notice I didn’t say “good flow” more on that later). Retro discussed and even watched video clips on the Ho stack and I believe we tried it twice before abandoning it and playing vert (hard to teach old retro dogs new tricks and seriously is it worth it?) So we began the game 3-1 early, with great handling by Dave Patton and Emily Haranin and some deep catches mostly by Chris Feeney (newbie tall dude pick up from the LAOUT website and my best decision this season…well that and playing B division). Retro got messy and somehow team Horizontal squeezed off a few points to end the half at 8-5. Mostly I remember they demolished our original zone and the captain (sorry don’t know his name but was wearing blue shorts) had some nice throws and hammer attempts in the end zone. Retro made some adjustments on D, which helped but the wind picked up A LOT and somehow we lost our flow and started dropping discs and throwing discs into the GROUND (like a Lonely Island Song) – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAYL5H46QnQ

Eventually we started treating the disc like it’s something worth cherishing…instead of a “cell phone, Man!” It was 12-7 at some point and then Horizontal pulled off like 3 unanswered points, which caused Retro to get tense and call some pivotal time outs. The score was 14-10 and our fearless captain (yes I am giving myself props and what!?!) called a play to iso our 3 ladies and it worked. The fab ladies Allison Regan, Alli “Moffa” Rosenzweig, and Emily Haranin – (shout out to Julie Birum Hills who had an amazing game but was not in that line at the time) worked it up the field and finally scored the final point. Some highlights: Even with some yelling from each side of the fields about out calls and strip calls, our teams lined up for hugs vs. high fives – who does that? We DO! Also Michael Cotter played what I am tokening as “ass D force” one point. I haven’t even talked to him about this yet but why not discuss it in the write up? From the sidelines Lance and I were cracking up b/c Cotter was turned around and instead of making the effort to turn 180 degrees to force forehand, he pushed his ass up against the guy and spread his arms out and forced flick with his ass. I was a sight to be seen. Who ever the guy was on offense, I hope it was as good for you as it was for him. ;)

Hey, you know, whatever works. And now from the losing side, Horizontal’s Kalle Tompros:

The wind was definitely a factor throughout the game last night as Retro took a 3-0 fast lead. Horizontal was a little swept off their feet, but struck back quickly ending the streak to make it 3-1. Retro maintained composure, though, and before we knew it the score was 5-2. Horizontal called a timeout to regain composure, and came out rolling. Consistent under cuts from Molly Ferguson and Julius Schaffer helped us keep up the flow in the first half. We nearly tied it up, but a wily gust of wind (summoned by Vega, maybe?) kept up Retro’s movement and led them to half, Horizontal trailing 6-8.

Horizontal’s defense was definitely what kept us in the game, especially Josh Orem’s not one, not two, but THREE hand blocks and Jim Comeau and Danny Kwok’s layout d’s. While we proved that we could dump and swing all day, Retro answered back and said that they could, too. After a couple of throwaways deep from Horizontal, Retro capitalized and won the game 15-10. Horizontal definitely fought to the end though, and both teams kept up the spirit despite a couple close calls and close plays. Team high fives turned into a line of hugs, and there was a lot of ultimate love to go around last night. Good game all around.

I think everything should end in hugs. Even, like, heart bypass surgery. Why not hug it out afterwards? The win keeps Retro undefeated at 3-0. Up next is Fresh Pots (4-0). Oh yeah! The marquee match-up. Next Tuesday. I had it marked down on my calendar. I think I may even go out there to keep some stats on the game. This could be the preview for B finals.

Horizontal suffers their first loss of the season, and they’re now 3-1. On Monday, they’ll play Flick Tease (1-2). The Tease are coming off their first win of the season.

In A Division, this game I really misjudged. Perhaps someone on AFO reads these recaps and saw how close Sky Life’s game was against Kong, so they were ready. Or maybe it was another reason, as Rob Armstrong of Sky Life explains:

Lots of wind meant lots of turns during the game, though it was more turns for Sky Life than it was for AFO. Sky Life started the game by digging themselves a 1-6 hole, then slowly climbed half way out when AFO took half 8-4. AFO kept their lead at four points until the score was 11-7, at which point they started to pull away again, eventually winning with a score of 15-8.

AFO is now 4-0. Sky Life is 1-2. But this really underscores the difference between the top 4 teams in A, and everyone else. Granted, the schedule has had a lot to do with it because those top 4 have yet to face eachother, but right now Kong, Marshall, Entanglement and AFO are a combined 15-0. The rest of A Division is 4-19-2. I know everyone has been talking about the drop from the top 4 to the rest of the league, but to see it like this, wow.

AFO’s next game is against one of those top four. They’ll play Marshall (3-0) on Monday. Sky Life plays Ice Ice Baby (0-3-1) on Tuesday.

Tonight’s action:

The A Division game pits two teams looking for their first win. The Huck and Chuck Show (0-3) goes up against Ice Ice Baby (0-3-1).

In B Division, Fresh Pots (4-0) gets their final audition before facing Retro. They’ll see Leggo My Tractor (2-1), the team of a million players.

I was really looking forward to this one. The Snowmen / Tarmac game. The back-to-back B Division champs of 2010 and 2011 now both in A. For the last two years Snowmen was always one division below Tarmac. But they finally got the chance to face eachother. Here’s Snowmen captain Devin Miller with the report:

The final score was 15-11. It was a well fought game last night, with points being traded consistently throughout. Tarmac was the first to draw blood and took and early lead with a few scores in a row. After a little regrouping, Snowmen battled their way back to take half at 8-7. As the game went on, the points seemed to stretch longer and longer, in part because both teams decided to throw zone against some very patient handlers, which taught me a very important lesson about being in the cup: it hurts. Finally, Snowmen caught a rhythm and went on to win the game, although with each point took a significant amount of effort with fantastic D’s by Eugene, Elya, and Bryan. Also, thanks to the ladies on our team who helped us take the lead in the second half, especially Morgan, Maggie, Naye, and Scrappy. I also want to put my vote in for Tarmac having the best post-game cheer of the season with flight attendant drink service by Bryanne for our team’s MVPs. Far more people would be willing to pay airline prices for that kind of service!

Cheers to that. Snowmen is now 2-3. They should have another great game against Top Shelf (1-3-1) next Thursday. Tarmac is now 0-5. They will play The Huck and Chuck Show (0-3) next Friday in a battle of teams that didn’t really want to be playing in A Division in the first place. I have no doubt there will be more discussion of the merits of that brief 3-division experiment of 2010.

Now to B Division, where Tiffany Wallace of Solidarity discusses their 15-8 win over Dream Team:

We broke the tie with a revolutionary uprising! 15-8 Solidarity! Now we’re overall 3-2 for the season. Built on principles of anti-bigotry, team camaraderie and overall funky frisbee education jams and good times; Solidarity is the party for the people. Get down! Rise up!

Inspiring. Solidarity is indeed 3-2 and gets Leggo My Tractor (2-1) next Friday. Dream Team (0-5) is still looking for their first win. They’ll try to get it next Thursday against Chalant (2-3).

Tonight’s action:

I’m expecting two reallygood games tonight. This might be the best night of Winter League so far this season. If I wasn’t such a huge fan of the Real World Road Rules Challenge (I am a junkie. It is my addiction.) I’d be out there watching.

In A Division, AFO (3-0) will play Sky Life (1-1). Sky Life is the new kid in town, but in their brief season so far they melted the Snowmen 15-7 and they nearly upset defending Champion Kong. Their rainout was really unfortunate, because it was against Entanglement, and I would’ve loved to see the outcome of that one. AFO has been knocking on the door of greatness in this league. After a finals appearance in 2010, they lost that heartbreaker in quarters to Kong thanks to Joe Forbes’ injury call (see the 2011 Awards). Sky Life might’ve surprised Kong, but I doubt anyone will take them for granted from now on, so they’ll have to bring it against AFO. Can’t wait to hear what happens.

And in B Division, you gotta love the battle of undefeated teams. Retro (2-0) of course is the ex-A Division team dropping down to B and has already won their first two games pretty handily 15-8 and 15-4. But the two teams they beat - Dream Team and Hucking in Tents - have combined for only one win, and that was when they faced eachother. This will be the real test for Retro, taking on 3-0 Let’s Get Horizontal. Horizontal has a couple nice wins to their name over Solidarity and Chalant.

I hope all four teams bring nearly full squads. This should be an exciting night!

Kong is 5-0 after a 15-10 win over Top Shelf Monday night. But the highlight (or lowlight) of TD Mike Peebler's recap was Milhouse's callahan. In B Division, Chalant eeked out a 15-13 win over Hucking in Tents. Click the pic of Milhouse to read more.

We have a special treat today, because the recap from the Kong / Top Shelf game comes from none other than TD Mike Peebler of Kong:

So in a game of “I Never”, if someone said, “I have never thrown a Callahan”, I would gladly mock other players while I watch them drink. Unfortunately in future games of “I Never”, I will be forced to imbibe if the same question is posed. The low point for Kong came as a result of me poorly executing a bad decision in the end zone, and Milhouse from Top Shelf also running so fast as to make himself invisible to the human eye. That should be a foul, but whatever. After that debacle, Top Shelf had completed a very impressive beginning to the game to take a 6-2 lead. Kong regrouped, I benched myself for a few points, and we began an equally impressive rally to take half 8-7. The second half started with trading points, but unforced errors and tighter play by Kong allowed us to stretch out our second half lead to eventually win 15-10. As the game wore on there were some chippy and questionable calls on both sides of the disc, but I was glad at how well-spirited everyone remained throughout. It was a great game and Kong feels glad to get the win over a tough opponent.

Kong has now taken 5 of 6 games from Top Shelf in regular season play dating back to 2008. Kong also is the first 5 win team this year in either division, and will play undefeated Entanglement next Wednesday. Top Shelf drops to 1-3-1 and plays Abominable Snowmen (1-3) next.

In B Division, it was a good old fashioned barn burner between Chalant and Hucking in Tents. Here’s Chalant captain Ryan Flegal:

A very spirited game tonight between Hucking and Chalant. Chalant had the half at 8 to 5 only to see Hucking come back and take the lead. Chalant pulled off the win 15-13.

Hucking has some great handlers and frequently broke Chalant’s force. Luckily, Chalant often had Travis in the end zone using his hight and jump to sweep over and block the downfield pass. Other Chalant team members also had great defensive plays like Jeff’s layout D in the end zone and Liverpool’s multiple dives.

The Chalant women held strong – handling, cutting, scoring and playing hard. Hucking had a couple great long passes to their women that had broken away and headed in to score.

Hucking had a great give and go rhythm coupled with bursts of speed that often left Chalant trailing behind.

All-in-all an exciting game and pleasure to play.

Chalant is 2-3 and plays Dream Team (0-4) next week. Hucking in Tents falls to 1-4 and gets Disc Jockeys (1-2) next.

Tonight’s action:

Abominable Snowmen (1-3) face off against Tarmac (0-4) in A. These two teams have never played eachother, because this is the first time they’re in the same division. Two years ago Snowmen won C Division while Tarmac won B, and they moved up a level simultaneously. So this should be an interesting one.

In B, Dream Team (0-4) has yet to notch a win, and they’ll try to get one against Solidarity (2-2).

Friday night Hucking in Tents got their first win of the season, 15-8 over Dream Team in B Division. And in A, Kong won handily 15-3 over Abominable Snowmen. Pictured here are the newest players in LA, Kief Zangaro and Becky Abe of Hucking in Tents, who have just moved North from San Diego.

Here’s a short recap from Abominable Snowmen captain Devin Miller after their game Friday night with Kong:

It was pretty much a blowout. Kong won 15-3. We just made a few simple unforced errors that their team capitalized on. It also didn’t help that most of our star female players were busy kicking butt in Arizona with Revolution. The three ladies that were able to come to our game definitely get props, especially since one was very sick.

Kong is now 4-0 after a 15-3 drubbing of the Abominable Snowmen (1-3). Kong plays Top Shelf (1-2-1) tonight and the Snowmen will play Tarmac (0-4) on Tuesday.

In B Division, two 0-3 teams squared off, with Hucking in Tents gaining their first ever victory 15-8 over Dream Team. Hucking will look to keep the momentum going tonight against Chalant (1-3). Dream Team plays Solidarity (2-2) on Tuesday.

Tonight’s action:

Kong (4-0) plays Top Shelf (1-2-1). When these teams played last year, Kong won 15-8. They’ve faced eachother 5 times with Kong winning 4 of those games. Although it’s interesting to point out that the most lopsided game they played was Top Shelf’s only win, a 15-3 blow-out in 2009.

Chalant (1-3) faces Hucking in Tents (1-3), who is coming off their first win of the season.

We have the first tie of the season. Ice Ice Baby and Top Shelf went the distance Thursday night, and noone won. 16-16. In B Divisin, Fresh Pots is 4-0 after their 15-5 stomping of Chalant. Click the pic of Ice Ice Baby's C-Note to read more.

Ice Ice Baby’s Christopher Ludwig gives the recap of last night’s game against Top Shelf:

Score ended at sixteen sixteen when the second light bank went out. The game was a back and forth between both teams. no team was ever up by more than three. both teams had some incredibly chilly play as the defenses made stall counts get high and points lasted longer and longer. well payed by both teams it was a very fun game to be a part of! ice may not have gotten its first win but it has scored more points every week so at some point we have to win. its just math!

I cannot argue with that logic. Ice’s next chance for the W comes Thursday against The Huck & Chuck Show (0-3). For Top Shelf, they’re 1-2-1 now, and they’ll play undefeated Kong (3-0) on Monday.

In B Division, Fresh Pots is dominating. Let’s hear from Chalant’s captain Ryan Flegal after playing the Pots:

Fresh Pots was a force from the start. They whopped us 8-0 in the first half. Their offense was disciplined. They worked the disk around very well. And they had great athleticism. Chalant made some impressive defensive plays but we just couldn’t take the disk all the way to the end zone.

Then came the second half. Score for the second half was Fresh Pots 7 and Chalant 5. What a difference. Chalant was connecting and stayed in for a spirited game. Final score 15-5.

Hats off to Fresh Pots. We sang them a song we wrote for their triumphant victory…

You’re a team of Fresh Pots
Quick and spry.
Here is your layout, Here is your sky.
When you get all steamed up, you will score.
So let’s have a cheer and a great big ROAR!

Fresh Pots captain Mike Endreola added: “I also want to mention that Chalant had awesome spirit, and gave us the best chant Fresh Pots has ever received.”

The Pots are 4-0. They play Leggo My Tractor (2-1) next Thursday. And then Retro (2-0) on the 7th. Chalant drops to 1-3 and gets Hucking in Tents (0-3) on Monday.

Tonight’s action:

Defending champ Kong (3-0) will attempt to be the first 4-0 team when they play last year’s B Champion Abominable Snowmen (1-2). After Snowmen was C Division champ in 2010, they moved up to B, but didn’t get the opportunity to face the reigning B winner because it was Tarmac, who themselves moved up to A. So now we have champion vs. champion and because it’s a Friday, sometimes people can’t make it, so that could be a factor. We’ll see.

In B Division, Hucking in Tents (0-3) and Dream Team (0-3) are both first time teams in 2012 and as you can see, neither one’s got in the win column. There’s no guarantee a win will happen tonight. Last night saw a tie. But hopefully one of these guys will get their franchise’s first win. (Yes, I called them franchises.)

AFO joins the other 3-0 teams in A Division with a 15-11 win over Tarmac Wednesday night. Also 3-0 is Let's Get Horizontal. They beat Solidarity 15-12 in B. Click the pic of AFO's Broccoli to read more.

The expected top 4 seeds have all won as expected. Entanglement, Kong and Marshall have all started out 3-0 and AFO joins the group. Here’s the recap of last night’s game from Remy Schor:

Our game started out a little late, but AFO appreciates the fact that Erick brought cones. We set the field up, un-aligned with the other field which resulted in several early game miscalculations and a handful of AFO turn-overs (read: hucks out the back of the end-zone). After recalibrating, AFO pulled to a lead of approximately several points to 1 or 2 (sorry, I don’t think I knew the score at any point during the evening). We took half at 8 to roughly 4 (?), keeping the play consistent and the attitude on and off the field positive.

After half, Erick C., playing some legit heads-up defense got taken out – poor guy – by a member of AFO on a deep throw, and crumpled to the ground. He slowly recovered, everyone agreed that it was an injury call, Erick subbed-out, we reset the disc, and scored. Great effort though Erick! Way to take one for the team. This is where the game got interesting, as Tarmac, perhaps because of their fearless leader’s defense, really turned it on and started to outscore us in the second half. Thanks to a couple of sick deep throws from D.OT, a couple of great reads also from D.OT, a ridiculous sprint for a goal by Stig, and some really excellent give-and-go by our final handler set (or is it gave-and-went? gaved-and-went? gived-and-go’d? – I’ve been wondering this for awhile?), AFO regained our momentum and finished up the game with a win at 15-11.

Great game Tarmac! Thanks for the fun.

And here’s a shorter recap from Tarmac’s side from James Renfroe:

Everything went well. The final score was 15-11 AFO wins. Halftime score of 8-3, AFO leading. I don’t have any photos and can try and write a recap later today but suggest someone with better writing skills give it a shot.

gossip…two of the tarmac players went home together. another tarmac player might be on her way to getting some sex. erick got beat up by a guy this week, which is a big upgrade from last week when it was a girl.

I asked him for gossip, and he did not disappoint. Tarmac drops to 0-4 and will face the Abominable Snowmen (1-2) next week. While AFO plays Sky Life next Wednesday (1-1), the new team that looks to be very formidable indeed.

In B Division, Let’s Get Horizontal has gone to 3-0 with a 15-12 win over Solidarity. Here’s the recap from Tony Cuviello:

Wednesday night’s matchup between Solidarity and Let’s Get Horizontal can be described in several ways: (1) intense, (2) intensely well-matched, (3) intensely warm-winded-which-is-very-off-putting-during-a-winter-league-game-in-January.

The game started out with the Ho’s jumping out to an early 4-1 lead with some amazingly crisp offensive awesomeness. David Reed and Craig “C2″ “PLAGUE!” Hargett had some delicious end zone receptions to swing the momentum Horizontally at the outset. Keeping their composure, however, Solidarity solidaritily mounted a 4-point comeback and went up on the Ho’s 5-4. Point-swapping ensued until Solidarity took half at 8-6.

After a short halftime pow-wow (literally), the Ho’s — at the reminder of their newest member, Cat Reisen, who was playing in her first league game ever last night (whole lots of awesomeness on that front) — remembered that, oh yeah, Ultimate is supposed to be a lot of fun… KNEW we were forgetting something toward the end of the first half.

SO, as the second half kicked off with Horizontal hucking to Solidarity, the Ho’s joyously charged down the field and proceeded to play one of the sickest defensive halves in Ultimate history. Amazingly enough, Solidarity’s offense rose to the occasion in spades as the Ho’s forced Solidarity time and again to make perfect throws and catches… and Solidarity did just that. After going into half 8-6 in Solidarity’s favor, the Ho’s came out with defensive and offensive guns blazing and scored 3 unanswered to make it 9-8.

Solidarity regained their composure and tied it 9-9.

Horizontal answered, 10-9. Then 11-9.

Solidarity came back with 3 in a row to make it 12-11.

Horizontal replied, 12-12. Game to 3.

And it was at this point that it appeared Horizontal’s superior man- and wo-man-power (amount of subs) became the difference maker as Horizontal kept it short and chilly on O with super-sharp cuts and nasty-quick throws, and Solidarity’s D stayed exceptionally strong, but there’s no match for fresher legs when you’re almost 2 hours into a game.

Horizontal was up 14-12 when a Solidarity player hucked one up to Colin in the endzone. Daniel “Bacon” Kwok was hot on his tail and both men leapt for the disk — Colin for the score and Daniel for the D — unfortunately their legs got tangled and Colin landed hard on his right shoulder. Play stopped for about 10 minutes while Colin was helped, and he eventually left the field under his own power but was definitely a little shaken up from his brief but intense battle with planet earth. You’ll get em next time Colin — and we all wish you a speedy recovery. If you heal up even remotely as quickly as you run, we’ll see you at Lake Hollywood on Saturday.

The Ho’s went on to a win that was much more quiet than the rest of this game dictated. Final score: Ho’s 15, Solidarity 12. Shout out to the entire Solidarity squad for some great spirit throughout the match. We enjoyed playing you guys.

And Ho-tastic shout out’s to Bacon for his non-stop defensive badassitude, and our fearless leader Kalle Tompros. We are shouting really loudly to you because you are in India and that is a long way away.

What a turnaround from last year for Horizontal when they started out 0-2-1, but they won the last 5 games of their regular season, so make it 8 in a row now. A Semi-Finals loss to Abominable Snowmen last year is their only blemish during that streak. And with Snowmen gone to A, Horizontal is positioning themselves to be the new king of B. Next Wednesday they’ll play undefeated Retro, and two weeks later they get undefeated Fresh Pots. So now is the time when we’ll see if they are really a finals contender.

Solidarity drops to 2-2 and plays Dream Team (0-3) next week.

Tonight’s action:

In A, Ice Ice Baby (0-3) is still looking for their first win. They’ve played the most difficult schedule so far. The record of the teams they’ve played is 9-0. But they get their first opponent that’s actually lost a game in Top Shelf (1-2). We’ll see if that makes a difference.

In B, Fresh Pots (3-0) takes their perfect record against Chalant (1-2).

Marshall beat The Huck and Chuck Show 15-5 in A. Click the pic of Flick Tease's Lewis Mauk to read more.

It’s still that early point in the season where a 2-0 team facing an 0-2 team doesn’t necessarily mean the 2-0 team is the better one. When winless Flick Tease met undefeated rookie Leggo My Tractor Tuesday night on a windy field, it took awhile to unknot the slim margin through the first half. When I checked in it was 6-6 and Flick Tease had just taken the 7-6 lead. But Flick Tease must’ve gotten more acclimated to the conditions, as they finished the game on a 9-2 run to win convincingly 15-8 and notch their first W of the season.

Flick Tease’s next opponent is 1-2 Disc Jockeys who is tied with them right down to the same point diff. Leggo My Tractor now must play undefeated Fresh Pots (3-0).

Huck & Chuck's Jesse Greenberg showing off his wheels.

On the other field, Marshall brought their 19-game undefeated regular season streak (which includes one tie) into the game against The Huck and Chuck Show, who was winless in their move up to A Division.

The first point was UG-LY! Turns out wind makes it harder to throw and catch. Who knew? Huck & Chuck employed the early zone, and it caused numerous turnovers before the first time-out. I love time-outs on the first point of the game. It’s like taking a lunch break at 9AM. Eventually Huck & Chuck ended the mediocrity when Matthew “Tigger” Chadwick caught the score to make it 1-0. But that would be Huck & Chuck’s last visit in the end zone for quite some time as Marshall reeled off 11 straight points.

From that point, it was a good back and forth game as each team scored 4 apiece, but it was too much to overcome and Marshall won it 15-5. And the win was made all the nicer cause old school Marshall player Tiffany Kitto was back in town to watch.

Huck & Chuck is now 0-3 but they’ll play fellow 0-3 team Ice Ice Baby next Thursday. Marshall is 3-0 and plays Entanglement (3-0) next Friday. This will mark the first game played between any of the anticipated top 4 teams in A.

Tonight’s action:

In A Division, AFO (2-0) looks to join the other 3-0 teams when they play Tarmac (0-3). Last year AFO won the match-up 15-10 in the only time these teams met.

In B, we should have a really good game between Let’s Get Horizontal (2-0) and Solidarity (2-1). Horizontal’s coming off the bye week and has two straight tough games here and with Retro next week.
