Summer League 2009 FAQ
Apr 1st, 2009 | By AndyBandit | Category: summer leagueWhat is Summer League?
Summer League is a draft league organized by the Los Angeles Organization of Ultimate Teams (LAOUT). This is LAOUT’s 12th year organizing a draft league. And for the 3rd time, there are two separate, but concurrent leagues. A Men’s League and a Co-Ed League.
Does Summer League have a theme this year?
Yes indeedy. 2009 happens to be the 30th Anniversary of the UPA starting in 1979. So to celebrate that, Summer League will have a 70’s theme.
Who can play in Summer league?
Summer League is open to Ultimate players of all skill levels who live in the greater Los Angeles area. The leagues are “beginner friendly.”
What are the rules for playing in Men’s League vs. Co-Ed League?
The Co-Ed League will have exactly the same number of men and women. The number of men allowed in the league is dictated by the number of women who sign up. Therefore, there is a cap to the number of men that can play co-ed. The Co-Ed league will run 4-3 or 3-4 offense chooses. There’s 11 games per team and games are to 15.
The Men’s League is open to all men, and will have no cap on the number of players allowed. There’s 12 games per team and games are to 17.
If I’m a guy, can I play in both leagues?
No. You may only play in Men’s or Co-Ed. If you wish to play in Co-Ed, but you don’t make it in via the lottery, you can still play in Men’s.
What’s the lottery?
If you’re a guy wishing to play in Co-Ed, you must get your registration and payment in by April 17th at noon to enter the lottery. I’ll be picking names out of a hat on Sunday, April 19th at Rose Bowl pick-up. You can come by to watch the lottery live, but it’s not necessary. And then I’ll let everyone know on Monday who made it into Co-ed. Note: some guys will get automatic entry into Co-Ed due to special issues (family with children, only one car, long distance travel, etc.)
Are there any overlapping games between the two leagues?
No. Despite playing at the same time, and having the tournament on the same day, the two leagues are completely separate.
When and where is Summer League played?
The 12 week season begins June 1 and ends August 21. Games are played Monday - Friday nights, 8:00 - 10:30 at the Balboa Sports Complex in Encino, CA and one game each week will be in another location (Venice and TBD). Each team will play one game per week.
How do I register?
Print out a Summer League Registration Form, available April 7 at noon. Fill it out and send it, along with your $50 check, made out to LAOUT, to the address listed on the form. Your registration form must be POSTMARKED by May 15, 2009 and payment must be received by that date. All players on both leagues will receive shirts and discs. Remember, for men wishing to play in Co-Ed, you must have your registration and payment by April 17 at noon.
What if I missed the deadline and still want to play?
Any players who sign up late - after the draft - can ONLY be added to teams to replace injured players, or players who drop out. Think of it as a crowded bar on Sunset. You can’t get in until someone else leaves. Players may only be added to teams with the consent of the Commissioner. Don’t just add ringers on your own.
Do I need to be a UPA member to play?
No. There is no UPA requirement in Summer League this year.
Can I baggage with other players?
Yes, but you may only baggage with one other player. Baggage will only be accepted under one of the following three conditions, and this is the same for people who want to captain together:
1) You have carpooling concerns.
2) You are in a committed relationship.
3) You are a veteran who is introducing a friend into playing ultimate for the first time, and they’d feel more comfortable playing with you.
So to be clear, if I’m a guy and want to baggage with my significant other, or female carpooling buddy, and my name was not selected in the Co-Ed lottery, what happens?
In that case, you can only play in Men’s League. Remember, if you have a special circumstance (family with children, only one car, long distance travel), let me know in advance of April 17th and you may be able to get an automatic entry into Co-Ed.
When and where is the tournament?
The Tournament will be on Sunday, August 23 at the Field of Dreams in San Pedro, CA, the same place as last year. I don’t have any information yet on the party.
Which edition of the UPA rules will the leagues use?
We’ll use the new 11th edition rules. I’ll be giving out a few rulebooks to each team captain at the draft. You can find a copy of the rules here: http://www.upa.org/ultimate/rules/11th

Is the print and mail form the same as the online form found under Member Admin? What is the address to mail it to? Why did the fancy new website make everything more difficult?
