Summer League 2010 Short Game Summaries
Jun 9th, 2010 | By AndyBandit | Category: Summer League6/8 – Monday’s games. The season is now officially underway.
In Co-ed League, Pretty in Pink (1-0) has started out strong with a dominating 15-5 performance over Jerry Brown (0-1). And in Venice, Whitesnake (1-0) slithered by Red M&M’s (0-1) 15-11. (SEE 6/7 RECAP BY BRIAN KUHN).
The Men’s League featured a fantastic first game of the season between Ice Cube (1-0) and White Zombie (0-1). White took an early 10-5 lead, but Ice came all the way back to take a 15-14 lead. White followed with two scores to wrestle the lead back 16-15, but Ice refused to give up, much like the real Ice Cube refused to give up after U.S. radio stations banned N.W.A. songs in the late 80′s, and scored the last three points of the game to outlast White 18-16. I’m told the play of the game was Max Kaufman’s layout D and immediately standing up to send a deep huck for the score.
6/9 – Tuesday’s games. Down goes Frankie! Down goes Frankie!
In case you didn’t hear, the Cal States tournament in Santa Cruz was this weekend. And Frankie Rho played for Metro. (The same Frankie who told me just days before during the Summer League draft that he was retired. Pshaw!!!) So apparently during a game, the other team makes a terrible call and Metro loses a goal because of it. Frankie is so pissed at the call that he spikes a Nalgene bottle, and get this, injures his shoulder in the process. I’m sorry… I’m still laughing. This has to go down as one of the silliest injuries in recent memory. Right up there with Gabe Brisson punching the ground in anger after getting scored on and breaking his hand a few years ago, in Summer League I believe.
How would this injury affect Dexey’s Midnight Runners (1-0) in their game last night against Forest Moon of Endor (0-1) in Co-ed League? Well, the answer is, not at all. I assumed that Frankie played on his injured shoulder, which wouldn’t surprise me a bit, since he’s made a general habit of playing left-handed during right-arm-related injuries. And sure enough, I got confirmation he played. Shocking. Midnight fell down early and was trailing 5-8 at half when they reeled off 8 straight points, and ultimately won 15-9.
In Men’s League, another good game down to the wire. This is two straight close games to start the season as Purple Rain (1-0) drowned Black Monday (0-1) by a score of 17-14. Perhaps Black Tuesday would have been more appropriate. (cue generic laugh track)
We take a breather on close Men’s League games tonight with two games in Co-ed instead. Royal Wedding plays Garfield Orange. And The Color Purple faces Green Slime.
6/10 – Wednesday’s games. This from Spike: Green Slime’s (0-1) sideline was looking good, with spaz, orin and (Jason) all sitting there all game with injuries. during warmup tossing, POPE got hit in the beak (aka nose) with a stray disc that left her bleeding, bandaged and also hanging out with the boys. none the less, they had 6 women to The Color Purple’s (1-0) 4. slime’s women were strong, but purple was taller, faster and had better cheers. traded points to 6. purple took half 8-6 and even though purple’s women were playing savage all night (4 total, so green played 3-4 as often as possible…which i’m not sure what the rules say…should probably look into that) they came out victorious.
[Editor's note: You may go 3-4 or 4-3 on offense whenever you want. If you only have 3 women and the other team is on offense, they have the right to go 3-4, and you would have to play one player down.]
In the other Co-ed game, Royal Wedding (1-0) defeated Garfield Orange (0-1) 15-10.
Tonight’s action: In Men’s League, Blue Velvet takes on Yellowbeard in a battle of mid 80′s films that both center around facial features. David Lynch’s 1986 surreal thriller about a man who finds an ear vs. the Monty Python meets Cheech and Chong 1983 comedy about a pirate with long golden chin hair.
In Co-ed League, a battle royale to be sure. Greg Preston’s Solid Gold was the concensus winner coming out of the draft. But good on paper doesn’t always translate to victories. They have a tough opening match-up against Grey Poupon, captained by two-time defending Summer League champions Seth Gillum and Aaron Jacobs.
6/11 – Thursday’s games. The two-time defending champions start off with a little bump in the road. Solid Gold (1-0) got the jump on Grey Poupon (0-1) in the closest Co-ed League game yet. 15-13.
In Men’s League, from Patrick: The game was a great start to the season. Blue Velvet (1-0) arrived kind of late with only 8 people, one of whom was injured early and went home — leaving us savage. Yellowbeard (0-1) arrived before 8 with a huge excited squad, so it looked grim. Yellowbeard moved quick and scored lots and had a commanding lead at 5-2. Blue Velvet finally hit their stride and took half at 9-7, and both teams traded points, and despite a strong surge by Yellowbeard at the end, BV limped off the field at 17-14. It was one of the most spirited and fun games I’ve ever played at summer league. Big plays by Biclops for yellowbeard and Ryan for Blue Velvet made it a really exciting match up. Can’t wait to see Yellowbeard again at the tourney.
Tonight’s action: We wind down the first week of the season as Bullet the Blue Sky faces Joat Jett & the Blackhearts in Co-ed. And in Men’s, it’s Simply Red against Gang Green.
6/14 – Friday’s games. In Co-ed, Bullet the Blue Sky (1-0) took an early dominating lead of 12-5 over Joan Jett & the Blackhearts (0-1), but Black came roaring back with 7 unanswered points to make a game of it. Still, Sky was able to hold off the onslaught and win 15-12.
In Men’s, this from Joel Uejio: IMHO, story of the game was Simply Red (1-0) rolling with a pretty solid looking 13 despite missing BC and some key others, with Gang Green (0-1) only fielding 8, but making a yeoman effort. Final score Red 17 – Green 9.
Tonight’s action: In Co-ed, Red M&M’s (0-1) and Forest Moon of Endor (0-1) are each looking to rebound from their first week losses, as they play eachother tonight. And Bullet the Blue Sky (1-0) hopes to keep undefeated against Green Slime (0-1). While in Men’s League in Venice, it’s Ice Cube (1-0) against Purple Rain (1-0).
6/15 – Monday’s games. We’ll start in Venice with the Men’s League game. This from Mike Dow. Purple Rain (2-0) won 17-14. Ice Cube (1-1) took a 4-0 lead, but purple stormed back to take half 9-8. They took the momentum into the 2nd half to take a 13-8 lead, but ice cube settled down their handling to get it to 13-11. Purple won two excruciatingly long points and ultimately worked it to 16-11. Cube fought back valiantly to 16-14, but purple finally sealed it. (SEE 6/14 RECAP BY BRIAN KUHN).
In Co-ed there were two games. The first one, Red M&M’s (1-1) won 15-10 over Forest Moon of Endor (0-2). I’m told there were no thrilling comebacks, no highlight reel D’s, just some solid offense, some hard defense and some nice throws.
And in the other co-ed game, Bullet the Blue Sky (2-0) gunned down Green Slime (0-2) by a score of 15-9.
Tonight’s action: In Co-ed, The Color Purple (1-0) faces Jerry Brown (0-1). Brown is looking to rebound from the worst loss of the opening week. And in Men’s, two teams hoping to right their ship after first week losses. Black Monday (0-1) vs. Gang Green (0-1).
6/16 – I’ll be writing recaps for both of last night’s games shortly. May have the Men’s one up tomorrow, but I’ll definitely get the Co-ed one out today. Last night was The Color Purple (2-0) 15-12 over Jerry Brown (0-2) in co-ed, and Gang Green (1-1) 17-15 over Black Monday (0-2) in Mens. (SEE 6/15 RECAPS BY ANDY BANDIT).
Tonight’s action: Two Co-ed games, pitting winless teams against eachother and lossless teams against eachother. Pretty in Pink (1-0) plays Royal Wedding (1-0). Garfield Orange (0-1) takes on Grey Poupon (0-1), soon to be renamed the much hipper Castle Grayskull, I’m told.
6/17 – Two Co-ed games were played last night. The defending champs Seth and AJ won their first game of the season in convincing fashion as Grey Poupon (1-1) (unofficially Castle Grayskull) took down Garfield Orange (0-2).
In the other game, this from Foca: Final Score: Pretty in Pink 15 Royal Wedding 13
Pink struck first with 2 points out of the gate. Royal answered back with 4 points in a row. Pink scored and then broke Royal then we traded points until 6-5 with Royal in the lead. Pink came out with a surge and took half 8-7 or 8-6.
After half the teams traded points again with Pink in the lead this time. Royal tied it up and called a T.O. to “ice the offense”. Royal came up with a few turns in the second half but had trouble capitalizing. Pink went up two points until Royal scored to make it 14-13 then got the D on a floaty, half field pass to the endzone. A foul was called by Pink and uncontested by Korb.
With the disc on the goal line Pink made an easy pass to end the game.
Highlights of the g.:
Bishop – lei-out D
Simon Margolis – Playing left handed with a separated shoulder
Matt Hennessy’s – surprise pre-birthday party
Enway’s face after a shot of Crown Royal
Tonight’s action: If you can tear yourself away from Game 7 of the NBA Finals, it’ll be Whitesnake (1-0) vs. Solid Gold (1-0) in Co-ed and White Zombie (0-1) vs. Blue Velvet (1-0) in Men’s.
6/18 – Not a good night to be White. In Men’s League, Blue Velvet (2-0) beat White Zombie (0-2) 15-7. (Note: game was incorrectly played to 15 instead of 17.) This from Patrick Hagan. Final score last night was 15-7, Blue Velvet. White showed up with only 6 guys to start but they played hard and we traded the first few points. They put up a great zone defense (especially for 6 people) that made it hard to push the disc forward at all. A ringer showed up for white at half that evened the odds. Ultimately Blue Velvet settled into a chilly offense that methodically played through the tight zone d and allowed us to march ahead. Good times.
In Co-ed, Solid Gold (2-0) absolutely spanked Whitesnake (1-1) by a score of 15-3. As captain of Whitesnake, the blame ultimately falls on my shoulders. It’s a game I will try very hard to forget.
Tonight’s action: In Co-ed, Dexy’s Midnight Runners (1-0) faces off against Joan Jett & the Blackhearts (0-1). In Men’s, it’s Simply Red (1-0) against Yellowbeard (0-1).
6/21 – On Friday night Simply Red (2-0) defeated Yellowbeard (0-2) 17-10 in Men’s. And Dexy’s Midnight Runners (2-0) defeated Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (0-2) 15-6 in Co-ed. Frankie said black was sans tai and sam. knuckles, brian bowe, JP and ivan all played well. the halftime score 8-1. jaws scored a lot. joe forbes threw a lot of hucks. a good time was had by dexy’s midnight runners at the robin hood.
Tonight’s action: Two games in Men’s. Black Monday (0-2) and Yellowbeard (0-2) square off, both hoping to get into the win column. And Simply Red (2-0) takes on White Zombie (0-2) in Venice. In the Co-ed League, two undefeated teams oppose eachother as Pretty in Pink (2-0) faces Solid Gold (2-0).
6/22 – Monday night’s games saw two of the undefeated teams fall. But the best game may have been between two teams that hadn’t yet won. Yellowbeard (1-2) vs. Black Monday (1-2) in Men’s League.
This from Ben Cohen of the Yellow team:
One of the most epic ultimate games I have ever been a part of. (from the sidelines)
Monday night brought two talented teams to the field with a lot of pride on the line. Both teams (I am told) started playing hard and fast, with A LOT of heart. A Handlers duel started as they both threw on the Zone defense early. By the time this injured captain got to the field 10 minutes late, the game was already fully underway with Black up 4-3. Yellow was given a pep talk and went back out, ready to make some changes. But black would not let that happen. They scored a few quick points, taking the half at 9-4. The second half started with yellow scoring a quick first point and playing some hard D. Score went to 9-7 before Black decided that enough was enough and lengthened their lead to 10-7. But yellow was not out of it yet. They threw on a tough Zone that would not be broken, and got back a few points to make the score 10-9. Yellow and Black traded points until the score was Black 14, yellow 13. At this point, the Beard got some fire in their pants and tied it up at 14. From there they took the lead at 15. Black tied it up at 15, but that was the last point they would score, as yellow scored two in succession to get their first win of the season. A really well fought game by both sides, filled with emotion and sweat. I speak for yellow when I tip my hat to Black for giving it their all! Final – Yellow win 17-15.
In the other Men’s League game in Venice, Simply Red (2-1) faced White Zombie (1-2). This from Red captain Milhouse:
-White had 2 players for the first 15-30 minutes, then some trickled
in, and we played 6-on-6.
- White rattled off 3 or 4 points right away, and took half 9-7.
- The remainder of the game was well-fought and good-spirited.
- We stopped the game when the lights went out.
-Remy Schor shows up with her new bf, Eric Brach, and she proceeds to
be more vocal than I’ve ever heard her be (ie, at football parties).
And in the Co-ed game, Pretty in Pink became the first (3-0) team by winning 15-13 over Solid Gold (2-1).
Tonight’s action: I love these games. Two unfeated teams and two unvictorious teams. In Co-ed, Green Slime (0-2) matches up with Jerry Brown (0-2). In Men’s, Purple Rain (2-0) squares off against Blue Velvet (2-0).
6/23 - We’re down to only one undefeated team in Men’s now. And it was yet another barn burner between Purple Rain (3-0) and Blue Velvet (2-1).
This from Purple captain James Renfroe:
This was an extremely hard fought game with both teams playing short on numbers. Both teams traded points for a while. Just before half Purple went up and had, I believe, an 8-5 lead. Blue then went on a four point run and took half. After half I think Blue scored the first two points. Then we traded off a few and then Purple went on a run and got the score to 15-13. Blue tied it up. Purple I think then scored a quick point off an unfortunate turn near the goal line by Blue. Then after an excruciatingly long point with opportunities made and missed on both sides, Purple managed to score the game winning point making the final score 17-15.
In Co-ed, Jerry Brown (1-2) got into the win column with a 15-9 win over Green Slime (0-3).
Tonight’s action: Two Co-ed games. The undefeated Dexy’s Midnight Runners (2-0) and Bullet the Blue Sky (2-0) face off. And Red M&M’s (1-1) plays Garfield Orange (0-2).
6/24 – On an momentous sports day, when the U.S. advanced in the World Cup in extended minutes, and the longest tennis SET in history obliterated all previous MATCH records (and finally ended today 70-68!!!), let’s not lose sight of the real story. Two Summer League Co-ed games were played in Encino, CA last night. Wow.
Dexy’s Midnight Runners (3-0) defeated Bullet the Blue Sky (2-1) 15-7. This from Frankie:
Sky was missing Taz and Trogdor but appeared to have everyone else. We started the game with only three women (Jaws, Lexy and Brocc). We were able to get up 4-2 with our 6-person zone. Tiffany Ho came to save the day around then. Sky came back to close to 5-4 but we got a lucky deflection on a pass intended for FJR that got D’d by Norm right into the hands of Tiffany.
We scored the next three points to take half and the 9-4 lead.
Joe Forbes was on fire with his deep throws. Lexy Roy had a couple of great Ds. Good positioning is 90% of defense. Brocc was anchoring the handling and Luke, Jas and Machina were tearing it up on the cutter side.
In the other game, Red M&M’s (2-1) won their 2nd straight with a 15-8 win over Garfield Orange (0-3).
Tonight’s action: Again, two Co-ed teams face off. The Color Purple (2-0) vs. Castle Grayskull (1-1). Royal Wedding (1-1) vs. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (0-2).
6/25 – Two blow-outs in Co-ed last night, so not very exciting. Royal Wedding (2-1) defeated Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (0-3) 15-5.
Castle Grayskull (2-1) took down The Color Purple (2-1) 15-3.
Tonight’s action: In Co-ed, Whitesnake (1-1) faces Forest Moon of Endor (0-2). In Men’s, Ice Cube (1-1) plays Gang Green (1-1).
For those wondering, when are we gonna get our jerseys…. it’s probably not gonna be for a few weeks unfortunately. 5 Ultimate is backed up on their orders. So hopefully you can be patient.
6/26 – Week 3 came to an end. It was a Matt Mihm kind of night.
In Co-ed, Forest Moon of Endor(1-2) got their first win of the season with a spirited 15-10 victory over Whitesnake (1-2). Mark Hartford, it turns out, is a squirrelly little f’er, and in the zone you could not stop him. Katie Killebrew was the primary puller for Forest, because honestly her pulls were way more consistenly in-bounds than Mark’s. She IS a Regionals champion to be fair. Ben Potash was faster than I’ve ever seen him. Personal trainer. It pays off.
In Men’s, Matt Mihm showed up to his first game for Gang Green (2-1) and ripped it up. There is no doubt in my mind that Green would’ve lost big time, HUGE time, if not for Matt’s presence, his unshakable field awareness, his focused and unequivocal mastery of game tempo, and his God-like precision. To watch him in action is…. well, I can only speculate, but it must have been akin to witnessing Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel. Green….nay, Matt….defeated Ice Cube (1-2) 17-12.
Don’t forget to watch the U.S. take on Ghana Saturday morning in that soccer thing in Africa.
6/29 – Monday had four games played, and there’s recaps for all of them. Click into this page and check out the link for Monday, June 28. (SEE 6/18 RECAPS.)
Tonight’s action: In Co-ed, Dexy’s Midnight Runners (3-0) hopes to remain unbeaten against The Color Purple (2-1). And in Men’s, Black Monday (0-3) is hoping just to get their first win as they face Simply Red (2-1).
6/30 – The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. In Co-ed, Dexy’s Midnight Runners (4-0) moved their way back to the top of the standings with a 15-11 win over The Color Purple (2-2). And Frankie wrote a recap of this game (SEE 6/29 RECAP BY FRANKIE RHO).
This leaves Midnight and Pink as the only two undefeated teams in Co-ed. They play eachother Friday, July 23. Mark your calendars.
In Men’s Black Monday (0-4) remains the only team without a win in Men’s after a 17-14 loss to Simply Red (1-3). Although they haven’t won a game, they’ve been in every contest and haven’t lost by more than 3 points in any game.
Tonight’s action: We’ll start in Men’s League where the final undefeated team Purple Rain (3-0) takes on Gang Green (2-1) so that should be a great match-up. And in Co-ed, Garfield Orange (0-3) is hoping to get into the win column against Bullet the Blue Sky (2-1).
7/1 – Men’s League just got tighter, and now no team is undefeated. Last night Gang Green (3-1) defeated Purple Rain (3-1) and for the first time, there’s TWO recaps of the same game, from both sides of the coin. I LOVE it. (SEE 6/30 RECAP)
In Co-ed, Garfield Orange (1-3) finally got into the win column with a 15-13 win over Bullet the Blue Sky (2-2).
Three games tonight to finish out the week, since there’s no games on Friday. In Co-ed, Solid Gold (2-1) takes on Joan Jett & the Blackhearts (0-3) and Castle Grayskull (2-1) plays Green Slime (0-3). In Men’s, at Reseda, Ice Cube (1-2) goes up against Blue Velvet (2-1).
7/7 – Alright, let’s catch you up on everything that’s happened since Thursday.
Thursday’s games in Co-ed saw Castle Grayskull (3-1) win 15-12 over Green Slime (0-4). And Solid Gold (3-1) grabbed a 15-8 victory from Joan Jett & the Blackhearts (0-5). In Men’s at Reseda, Blue Velvet (3-1) won 17-14 over Ice Cube (1-3).
No games were played on Friday or Monday. Many of us were getting drunk in Seattle.
Last night, three games as well. In Co-ed, Dexy’s Midnight Runners (5-0) became the first team to win 5 games when they beat Garfield Orange (1-4) 15-13 in Reseda. And Forest Moon of Endor (2-3) handily defeated Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (0-5), who were playing with only 5 players. The final score was 15-3.
In Men’s, this from James Renfroe in the Purple Rain (4-1) vs. White Zombie (1-4) game:
For tonight’s match up between Purple and White, Purple came to the fields with an entirely different squad. Mostly because most of the team actually made it to the fields. After last week’s loss to Green, Purple had a lot to prove and unfortunately White took the brunt of it. With Purple fielding 11, they were able to sub out and it created a completely different game. It was fast moving with a lot of continuation cuts and big deep plays. There were aggressive lay out D’s and some sick grabs. White played a solid game but unfortunately wasn’t able to keep up. Brad, Tim and some of the USC boys did their best to control the disc and the field and did a pretty good job at it. White took the first two points to start the game and then Purple went on a fast 4 point run. A couple of points traded and then Purple pulled ahead to 8-4. White came back pulling the game within one making it 8-7 and then Purple managed to take the half. In the second half, Purple kept the disc moving and played some really solid D making the final score 17-11. With Purple’s destiny tied to who on the team shows up it begs the question…which Purple will show up for next week’s game against Red?
Tonight’s action: In co-ed, Bullet the Blue Sky (2-2) faces Jerry Brown (1-3), while in men’s, it’s Simply Red (3-1) and Ice Cube (1-3).
7/8 – Wednesday night saw Simply Red (4-1) keeping the heat on Purple Rain with a 17-10 win over Ice Cube (1-4) in Men’s. This from Joel Uejio:
Red started strong with a lot of buttery smooth “dump-and-swing” action. The Red handlers established early on an ability to keep the disc moving and break the mark. Ice showed potential for a power deep game, but couldn’t quite generate enough clean looks to be successful. This resulted in a 9-5 half-time lead for Red. The second half played out in a similar fashion ultimately leading to a Red win.
In Co-ed, Bullet the Blue Sky (2-3) has had a rough go. After starting their season 2-0, they’ve lost three straight, including last night’s 14-11 loss to Jerry Brown (2-3).
Tonight’s action: Two games in Co-ed. Solid Gold (3-1) faces Green Slime (0-4). Whitesnake (2-2) takes on Castle Grayskull (3-1).
There was also a Men’s League game scheduled tonight between Gang Green and Yellowbeard, but that game has been postponed until the last week of the season because apparently there’s some fair at Reseda, and they didn’t remember it was there until a couple weeks ago. (What? Valley Municipal Sports made an error? Shocking!)That does make for an interesting final week though since Green and Yellow will play eachother twice that week, which would be a first in LA history, and you know how I love firsts!
7/9 – It’s late and I’ve gotta get up super early to go to Kansas, so here’s the scores from Thursday night quickly. Gold 15 – Green 9. Grey 14 – White 12.
7/12 – Friday night had three games. The Pink storm rolled on as Pretty in Pink moved to 5-0 with a 15-12 win over Red M&M’s (3-2) in Co-ed.
In the other Co-ed game, the women dominated the action. This from Foca about Royal Wedding (3-2) vs. The Color Purple (2-3):
Royal Wedding won 15-9. Each side were only able to field three men, Friday night at Balboa was truly ‘girl’s night out’.
During the captains meeting it was agreed that we would play 5-2 or 4-3 (women) which worked out to Royal’s advantage as Purple’s men were from the top half of their draft. Royal started out 4-0 and the first half ended 8-2. Purple was having a tough time matching up with Royal’s women who came out on fire.
Purple made some tweaks on their end and came back strong with some zone and junk d’s. The changes worked and Purple went point for point in the second half 7-7. Too little too late.
Pizza and beverages were had by all.
In the Men’s game in Venice, the lights apparently didn’t come on I’m told, but the game went on anyway with Blue Velvet (4-1) getting the 17-10 win over Black Monday (0-5).
Tonight’s action: All three games are in Co-ed tonight. And two of them feature the last undefeated teams. Pretty in Pink (5-0) will try to stay unbeaten against Whitesnake (2-3). In Venice, Dexy’s Midnight Runners (5-0) looks to hold their #1 seed as they play Jerry Brown (2-3). And the other Balboa game features Red M&M’s (3-2) taking on Joan Jett & the Blackhearts (0-5) with Sam and Tai fresh off their respective bachelor/bachelorette parties.
7/13 – Trending now. The undefeated remain undefeated. The winless stay winless. And that’s how it goes in Co-ed. Last night Pretty in Pink (6-0) and Dexy’s Midnight Runners (6-0) were still neck and neck for first place, and that only heightens the excitement over next Friday’s match-up between the two.
Pink got their win at Balboa, 15-7 over Whitesnake (2-4). Midnight’s win came in Venice, 15-6 over Jerry Brown (2-4).
And poor Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (0-6), struggling all season to get their top drafted players to show up or stay healthy, played against a bare-bones Red M&M’s (4-2) squad, themselves missing several key players, and playing close to savage. It was a gutsy game between the two that Red finished on top 15-13. (SEE 7/12 RECAP BY CHAD WOODARD).
Tonight’s action: No teams above .500 tonight. In Co-ed, two 2-3 squads battle it out between Forest Moon of Endor and The Color Purple. In Men’s, Yellowbeard (2-2) will try to make Ice Cube (1-4) walk the plank.
7/14 – We have reached the official half-way mark through the season. There’s 11 weeks in the season, and this is exactly 5 1/2. That’s something to be excited about. I expect Chad Woodard’s Mid-Season Power Rankings any day now. *hint hint*
Last night in Co-ed, The Color Purple (3-3) won 15-12 over Forest Moon of Endor (2-4). It was a big deal for the Purple crew since they had lost 3 straight after opening the season 2-0. Trying to right the ship for the stretch run.
In Men’s, Ice Cube (2-4) had a similar change last night, since they had lost 4 straight since their opening week win. But a 17-13 win over Yellowbeard (2-3) may be giving them renewed hope.
Tonight’s action: This is one of those games I love. The 1 seed vs. the 2 seed in Men’s. Simply Red (4-1) takes on Purple Rain (4-1). Now, there’s two other Men’s League teams with only 1 loss, but Purple beat one of them (Blue), and Red beat the other (Green). I’m anxious to see the outcome of this one.
In the undercard, Solid Gold (4-1) is hoping to keep up with the undefeated teams in Co-ed as they face Bullet the Blue Sky (2-3). They’re going to have to hope for losses by Pink or Midnight, because Gold does not get a chance to face Midnight and they already lost to Pink.
7/15 – I’ve gotta say, most of the games in Summer League this year have been close, and that’s awesome to see. Last night was another example of this. In Co-ed, Solid Gold (5-1) did indeed keep pace with the leaders, beating Bullet the Blue Sky (2-4) by a narrow 15-13 margin. This puts them in 3rd place behind Midnight and Pink. They’ve already lost to Pink, and they don’t get to play Midnight, so it’s out of their hands for one of the two expected first round byes. Midnight plays Pink next Friday though, so one of them in theory has to lose.
In Men’s League, another overtime game, but with big implications, because this game was between the top 2 seeds Simply Red (5-1) and Purple Rain (4-2). Red prevailed 18-16 and there’s a recap of this game by James Renfroe (SEE 7/14 RECAP BY JAMES RENFROE).
Tonight’s action: Men’s League has been on fire this week. First the top 2 seeds play eachother, and tonight, it’s the other two teams with only 1 loss apiece. Gang Green (3-1) faces Blue Velvet (4-1).
In Co-ed, a battle of attrition between Garfield Orange (1-4) and Green Slime (0-5).
7/16 – Ladies and gentlemen, stop the presses. We have our first tie!!! It was bound to happen. And in a year where we have a World Cup, ties are inevitable. Last night two of the top seeds in Men’s League went head to head – Blue Velvet (4-1-1) and Gang Green (3-1-1). But noone gave an inch, and the score ended 16-16 when the lights went out. I’m impressed with Blue, who was playing with a skeleton crew when I was out there, and I thought for sure Green would take the game. But sometimes they say playing near savage can be an advantage.
In Co-ed, Garfield Orange (2-4) kept Green Slime (0-6) winless 15-10. My favorite part was that Rob Severson reads Garfield comic strips to his team before games. That is an awesome appreciation of the theme.
I would’ve stayed to write recaps on the games, but I had to go cry at Toy Story 3.
Tonight’s action: A big game in Co-ed, with Royal Wedding (3-2) matching up against Castle Grayskull (4-1). Grey’s only loss came to 5-1 Gold. They play Midnight in Week 9, but don’t get to play Pink. Royal has the advantage of not having to play either Midnight or Gold.
In Men’s League, the bottom two seeds are going at eachother. It’s White Zombie (1-4) vs. Black Monday (0-5).
7/19 – On Friday night in Co-ed, Castle Grayskull (5-1) kept the pressure on the leaders with a 15-6 win over Royal Wedding (3-3). That’s 5 straight wins since their opening week loss to Solid Gold, who’s the other 5-1 team. It’s a tight 4-team race for those two first round byes. Grey and Pink do not play eachother. Gold and Midnight do not play eachother. Pink beat Gold. Gold beat Grey. Pink and Midnight play this Friday. Grey and Midnight play week 9.
In Men’s, Black Monday (1-5) finally got into the win column. There are now no undefeated or unvictorious teams in Men’s. They beat White Zombie (1-5) 17-6. This from Rhett Nichols:
White had 7 guys. Black had 6 guys. For some reason White decided to play 6 and have a sub. We of course were fine if they wanted to play 7 but it never happened.
It was close in the beginning, traded points but Black eventually took half 9-4. Then we went on to win 17-6 (they had 5 or 6, can’t remember exactly so let’s go with 6). I thought at half that White was going to insert their 7th player onto the field but they didn’t do it. You’ll have to get their thoughts as to why but they either wanted a sub or they felt like it was a nice gesture to play 6s.
Friday nights are tough so kudos to both teams for hanging in there with so few guys.
Tonight’s action: In Men’s, now that Black Monday (1-5) has slayed the team directly above them, they get the chance to do it again as they take on Ice Cube (2-4).
In Co-ed, two games. Jerry Brown (2-4) and Garfield Orange (2-4) square off. And in Venice, it’s Royal Wedding (3-3) vs. Green Slime (0-6).
7/20 – That’s a nice shiny W you have. Why thank you, says Green Slime (1-6) as they finally move into the win column with a narrow 15-13 win over Royal Wedding (3-4) last night in Venice. Now I don’t know what to think of Royal, because that was a team I thought was going to battle the leaders. When at full strength they should be one of those low seeds you don’t want to have to face in the first round.
In the other Co-ed game, Garfield Orange (3-4) picks up their 2nd straight win, 15-13 over Jerry Brown (2-5). Reading Garfield comic strips to his team before games is starting to pay off sweet dividends for Rob Severson.
In Men’s League, Black Monday (2-5) has done it again. After starting the season 0-5, this is now two straight weeks slaying the team directly ahead of them. They beat Ice Cube (2-5) 17-13. This from Rhett Nichols:
Ice broke Black twice and went up 2-0. Ice looked pretty smooth on offense and easily capitalized on Black’s early turnovers. Black made a mini comeback utilizing a zone that caused Ice a lot of problems and took half at 9-7. Great defense by Paul Lee and Bryce got Black back into the game.
Black extended their lead by a few to start the second half with steady offensive play from Mikey, Alex Mensen, and Kyle Stewart. Ice though did not back down as they got within two at 14-12. Colin from the Ice team was making big catches as well as some tall guy that made some fantastic plays against the zone. I wish i knew that guy’s name.
But it looked like Ice ran out of gas at the end as Corey Sanford connected with Alex Chung for the game winner.
Tonight’s action: Crack out your Pete’s Wicked Ale and your Two Buck Chuck, cause it’s Mediocre Night in Co-ed. Forest Moon of Endor (2-4) and Bullet the Blue Sky (2-4) will play a game tonight. As will Whitesnake (2-4) and The Color Purple (3-3). But I wouldn’t check ESPN’s Sportscenter for highlights.
7/21 – It’s all about the theme. I forget this at times, even though I decided the theme. So I borrowed a little inspiration from Rob Severson. After watching him read Garfield comic strips to his team before games, I realized the problem with Whitesnake (3-4) is not the team. It’s me. I’m failing to inspire them. So last night I brought lyrics from a random Whitesnake song and read them to the team before our game. The song: “The Time is Right For Love”. It SO was. White won 15-4 over The Color Purple (3-4) and with the win skyrocketed 5 slots in the standings, from 11 to 6.
(For those wondering how I’m resolving ties at this point in the season, I’m sort of following the order indicated on the standings page. First is head-to-head and then I just jump to point diff., cause it’s still too early to take the time to figure out record against common opponents. By around week 9, I’ll start ensuring that all the tie-breakers are being strictly followed.)
The other co-ed game went right down to the wire between Bullet the Blue Sky (3-4) and Forest Moon of Endor (2-5). It was 10-10 at the time our game ended, and after playing a little pick-up, I came back to find it 15-15. Forest scored the go-ahead point in the near corner of the endzone on a bang bang play to make it 16-15. And just as Sky’s captain came up to me to ask me about the light situation, the lights went out, giving Sky the closest of victories.
Tonight’s action: It’s all Men’s League at Balboa. And the featured game is yet another 1v2 match-up. Simply Red (5-1) vs. Blue Velvet (4-1-1). That should be a great one. Gang Green (3-1-1) will look to try and leap-frog one of those two teams as they face off against White Zombie (1-5).
7/22 – Simply Red (6-1) is now establishing themselves as the clear and obvious force in Men’s. With their 17-5 thrashing of the previously 2nd seeded Blue Velvet (4-2-1), there is no longer any doubt who’s the top dog. (Although I suspect Blue must have been missing a few key players.) They have beaten all the other strong teams – Green, Purple and Blue – and their point differential of +35 is 11 pts. higher than the combined point diff. from those three teams. Dominance, ladies and gentleman. Dominance.
Interestingly, the one team Red lost to is White. And interestingly, White’s only win came against Red. I would call that – unexpected.
Speaking of White Zombie (1-6), they lost to Gang Green (4-1-1) 17-11 last night. This from Green captain Jeff Chai:
With a nice repreive from the heat of last week’s game, White and Green met at Balboa. Both teams had 3-4 subs by the end of the game which allowed for lots of playing time and ability to gel. The teams traded for the first 8 points to a draw though there were changes for each side to get some breaks and potentially blow the game open.
Sauce was on fire with his laser flicks while Brad Rosen was tough to stop from the handler position. Realizing the obvious advantage White was displaying with their forehands, Green changed the force to backhand and that proved the difference maker. White was able to work their backhands well towards the line but struggled to move the disc back across the field, which gave Green an easier job on defense. Additionally, the hucks that came from the forehand weren’t materializing with the backhand force. An injury to Eric Brach and the absence of GVP hurt White’s cause immensely.
For Green, it was a total effort by the team. Each member was getting D’s and working well together to create space and make good open cuts. Kenny McNett, Ariel Kumpinsky and Brad Weyers handled most of the under cuts allowing space for deep looks to Jeff Chai and Adam Pfendt.
The final score was 17 to 11 Green though it will be good to see how the matchup works with a full White squad.
Tonight’s action: Back to Co-ed. Tonight Red M&M’s (4-2) has an important game against Solid Gold (5-1). This is the game to determine, are they part of the elite crowd, or are they one of the many mere contenders? Because right now there’s clearly 4 teams vying for those 2 first-round byes: Pink, Midnight, Grey and Gold. Red is hovering just outside that group, but they can bring their name right into the mix with a win tonight.
In the other game, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (0-6) is now the only team in either league without a win. It’s not going to be easy to notch their first tonight as they have to face Castle Grayskull (5-1). Having a full squad show up could make all the difference, as is often the theme of Summer League.
7/23 – Ooooooh, SO close. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (0-7) has had some tough losses this year, but this was the closest, losing 12-11 to Castle Grayskull (6-1) in a game that must’ve been all zones cause that’s a damn low score. I’d assume maybe the lights went out early, but probably wasn’t the case cause the other game finished 15-13.
What a nice segue to Red M&M’s (5-2) victory over Solid Gold (5-2) that moves them into the group of elite teams in the league. This from Chad Woodard:
A game filled with hucks from both sides. Gold was missing some key personnel, namely BOFA, but that still didn’t deter them from hucking. Gold started strong with big hucks from Greg Preston to Chicago, Noah Tomaszewski, and Mike Tucker. Red tried the same but just couldn’t connect as often. Gold had a 7-3 lead, but Red got 2 more before they could take half, 8-5.
Red came out firing in the second half and after a few quick bombs to Bacon and C-note, found themselves tied at 8s to start the second half. Points would be traded and the game found itself to 13s. Red scored, and then Gold worked it past mid-field to answer but a low throw that Wendy just couldn’t get to on a layout would stop the drive. The game ended on the next throw with a Chad-to-Sarah love connection with Shuebox in hot pursuit. Game over 15-13 with about 3 minutes of lights left.
Preston, Chicago, Wendy and Minh played awesome for Gold and Minh had the top 2 plays of the game – including a sick, sick, sick trailing edge layout grab for a score. For Red, it was a group effort from the ladies on offense that got it done. Exciting game; I wish I had DVR’d it.
Tonight’s action: LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE GREATEST MATCH-UP OF SUMMER LEAGUE 2010 HISTORY!!! FRIDAY! FRIDAY!!!! FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!
If you’re thinking, “what am I gonna do tonight on this Friday? I have no plans and there’s no great parties happening.” Here’s a thought. I know a game over at Balboa that’s pitting the only two undefeated teams in LAOUT Summer League. Pretty in Pink (6-0) against Dexy’s Midnight Runners (6-0). Here’s 10 things to know about this game:
1 – Frankie will gladly tell you his teams always go to semis.
2 – Frankie is a sick drafter. He knows things about players that teenage boys don’t even know about Playboy centerfolds. I’ve known him to call friends in Arkansas to find out the scoop on some guy who just moved to L.A. So in the 3rd round of the draft, Frankie picked two UCLA guys who sandbagged themselves into the 18th round. When you’re at the draft, and people are yelling out “#27, John Johnson! #39, Phil Philson! #64, Tim Timson!” and then Frankie’s turn comes up and he goes “#241, Vincent Wu!” you’re like WTF Frankie. What secret formula of Coke did you just discover? It’s baffling.
3 – Some people think Pink is overrated, but I’ve played Pink, and Pink is good. The hype is real. I’m sorry, you can hype up Inception all you want, it’s still a great film. And Pink is a great team.
4 – Prepare to learn your Slow Children players. Jim Klimek of Pink is ready to jump out of the B League shadows and into the light of your consciousness.
5 – Dirty and Saus were both first time drafters. In fact, Dirty wasn’t even in the equation until the day before the draft, when Sausy made a last minute request for a co-drafter.
6 – Pomona players like to carpool. Because it’s kind of far. And they often request these 3-person or 4-person carpools for the draft. It didn’t happen this year. And then, coincidentally Simon and Llama, and Evan and Mich all got on the same team. Bam, 4-person carpool!
7 – Speaking of Pomona, in case you’re looking for the inside scoop on where the tournament might be this year, I have one word for you….. POOL!
8 – Frankie selected his brother-in-law Michael Carrier on his team this year. Keep it in the family people.
9 – Both Michael and Yosh of Midnight had the unfortunate luck of playing on Silver Surfer last year in Men’s League. That team went 1-11 with a point diff. of -92!!! Think maybe they’re happier about their situation this year?
10 – If Pink wins tonight, they have a very good shot to become the first ever Summer League team to go undefeated as none of the teams remaining on their schedule are above .500.
Tonight’s undercard. In Men’s League Purple Rain (4-2) takes on Yellowbeard (2-3).
7/26 – …..and still undefeated…… Dexy’s Midnight Runners (7-0) put an exclamation point on their number one seed with a 15-9 win over previously undefeated Pretty in Pink (6-1) on Friday night. Midnight is now pushing to become the first ever undefeated team in Summer League, but the road is tough for them as they still have to play 6-1 Grey and 5-2 Red. So stay tuned for that.
In Men’s League, Yellowbeard (3-3) took a 17-12 victory over Purple Rain (4-3).
Tonight’s action: In Co-ed, Pretty in Pink (6-1) tries to start another winning streak tonight as they face Bullet the Blue Sky (3-4). And the other Co-ed game is in Venice with The Color Purple (3-4) against Joan Jett & the Blackhearts (0-7).
In Men’s League, the bottom two seeds battle it out. Ice Cube (2-5) vs. White Zombie (1-6).
7/27 – HALLELUJAH… PRAISE THE LORD!!! I looked out my 13th story window this morning and a pig flew by. I knew it could only mean one thing. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (1-7) finally broke through into the win column last night in Venice. They took down The Color Purple (3-5) 15-9. A nice little wedding present for Sam and Tai who will be exchanging their nuptuals this Saturday.
In the other Co-ed game back at Balboa, Pretty in Pink (7-1) started another win streak with a 15-10 win over Bullet the Blue Sky (3-5). Yesterday’s two winners will face off next Thursday.
In Men’s League, we have reached the point where teams start facing eachother the second time. Last time Ice Cube (3-5) barely beat White Zombie (1-7) 18-16, but last night it was not as close. This from Mike Dow:
Though #1 overall pick Mark Miller delivered a line drive to Ice Cube’s emotional arm by skipping our game to see Dan Haren get nailed in his actual arm, our 8 man squad rallied from down 7-3 to take half 9-8 and then went on to push through a draining second half to hold on for a 17-12 win.
Tonight’s action: In Co-ed, Castle Grayskull (6-1) continues their drive towards the first round bye against Forest Moon of Endor (2-5). My biggest question is will Mike Margala be fully recovered from his drunken haze this past weekend at Hats, Hops, Hucks? Not likely. The man was a sight to see. If you wanted the sideline crowd to chant anything, you just fed it to Mike, and it happened.
In Men’s League, Purple Rain (4-3) plays their 2nd game against Black Monday (2-5). The first contest was won by Purple 17-14.
7/28 – It’s not about where you’ve been. It’s about where you’re going. Those words aptly apply to last night’s Men’s League game between Purple Rain (4-4) and Black Monday (3-5). After starting the season 0-5, which included a week 1 loss to Purple, Black Monday is completely rebounding their season, knocking off three straight opponents after their 17-13 win last night. Despite a losing record, they have a +2 point differential underscoring how close their losses have been. You could say though that the schedule has helped since their wins have all come against the bottom half of the pool. Up next is 2nd seeded Green.
Purple meanwhile has gone in the exact opposite direction, starting the season 4-1 but dropping three straight including back-to-back upset losses to lower seeded teams. Here’s a little bit about the game from Black captain Rhett Nichols:
I believe it was 17-13 Black. Purple broke first point of the game. Black went on a 6 point run I believe and took half 9-4 using a zone for a big part of that stretch. Purple scored two straight out of the half to cut the lead to 9-6. Black answered and both teams traded points for a bit. Purple kept fighting the whole way and I want to say got within two but then Black pulled away in the end. 17-13.
In Co-ed last night, Forest Moon of Endor (2-6) jumped out to a 9-3 lead, and then slowly watched Castle Grayskull (7-1) eat away at it until Grey finished it off 15-12 to hold onto the #2 spot in the standings. This sets up another 1v2 matchup next week between Grey and Midnight on Tuesday.
Tonight’s action: ANOTHER 1v2 matchup. This season has been awesome! It feels like every week there’s a 1 & 2 playing eachother. Simply Red (6-1) takes on Gang Green (4-1-1). Let’s see, what can I tell you to hype tonight’s game. Here’s 10 points of interest.
1) Last time these two teams played in week 1 and Red demolished Green 17-9. But that was on a Friday, so you never know who was missing.
2) Red Captain Milhouse did not make it to the draft, so the team had to be drafted by yours truly. To be fair, I can’t take much of the credit because Milhouse gave me a list of players he wanted, and the first 9 picks (half the team) were players he specifically requested me to draft for him.
3) Green’s captain is Jeff Chai. If that doesn’t immediately make you think of only one word, you have not been following L.A. ultimate the last year.
4) Red’s Joel Uejio is recovering from a broken nose suffered at Potlatch. Check out his Facebook page under his profile pictures for a really cool photo of his nose harness shortly after coming back from Seattle.
5) If Green’s Matt Mihm shows up, he will single handedly decimate Red’s defense. In fact, the moment he steps on the field, Red might as well give up and go home. (Matt would’ve asked me to write that. I’m not kidding. Well, maybe not word for word, but…. close.)
6) Milhouse may be the most loved player in all of California ultimate. Don’t believe me? Who else do you know has 1500 Facebook friends? Okay, maybe he could stand to purge a few. But honestly, whether you’re in the Bay area, LA or San Diego there is an amazing Brian Chen fanbase like I’ve never seen. If he competes 1 on 1 with ANYONE at ANYTHING, I promise you, the crowd will be on his side.
7) I’ve mentioned this before, but I’ll mention it again. Green has 6 left-handed players on their team. That is astoundingly half of all the lefty players in Men’s league.
8 ) Between Jeff Chai, Penguin, Houdini, Atilla, Cookie, Jacob Adler, Ratchet, Yoda and Brad Weyers, there are 9 players from UCLA in this game. And 0 from USC.
9) This is actually Red’s third straight 1v2 game. They beat Purple in week 6 and Blue in week 7.
10) I almost forgot my favorite stat. This game features Brad Rosen on Green. There are two Brad Rosen’s and two Brad Ross’s in L.A. ultimate. In all the rest of L.A., I think there’s only one other pair of same names. That’s just… I don’t know…. I love it.
In Co-ed, Red M&M’s (5-2) tries to stay amongst the leaders in their game tonight against Royal Wedding (3-4).
7/29 – It was a good night to be wearing a red shirt.
Let’s start in Men’s League where Simply Red (7-1) played their third consecutive 1v2 game, this time against Gang Green (4-2-1). You know, it’s amazing Red has played a different opponent in each of their 1v2 matchups. First Purple was the #2 seed, then Blue, and this time Green. And get this…. if Yellow beats Blue tonight, and Green loses next Wednesday to Black, it could set up a 4th consecutive 1v2 matchup against Yellow, the 4th different opponent. That’s just wacky.
Well, if you want to read about Red’s 17-11 win, check out Jeff Chai’s recap (SEE 7/28 RECAP BY JEFF CHAI). But I will tell you this. With Red’s victory, they have a point differential 34 points higher than the next closest team (nearly 6 times greater). That’s dominating your league. Naturally, because I’m insane, I had to look up the Summer League record for greatest point differential between top two seeds. And the current record is 23, held by last year’s Red team in Men’s league. But they didn’t even double the point diff. of the next closest team. What Simply Red is doing now is simply unprecedented!
Meanwhile, in Co-ed, the gap continues to widen between the top tier of teams and everyone else. All the 3-4 teams are losing this week. The trend continues with Red M&M’s (6-2) beating Royal Wedding (3-5) by a 15-4 margin.
This from Chad Woodard: Each team had 1 male sub, and Royal had no women subs. Red, hampered with injuries this week, wasn’t much better with only 2 ladies on the sideline. Kudos to Tammy Edwards on Royal for playing through injured ribs so Royal could field 7 people. Despite a lot of turnovers and long points, Red opened with a 7-0 run before Royal finally scored. Royal could never get into that savage 7 rhythm and fell 15-4.
Tonight’s action: In Co-ed, Dexy’s Midnight Runners (7-0) is trying to stay undefeated. They play Green Slime (1-6) tonight. Could it be the upset of the ages? And in Men’s League, Blue Velvet (4-2-1) meets Yelowbeard (3-3) and I mentioned what’s on the line there. Last time these two teams met Blue won 17-14.
7/30 – The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
Such was the case in Co-ed last night as Dexy’s Midnight Runners (8-0) remained undefeated after their 15-12 win over Green Slime (1-7). Now, the biggest hurdle in their race to be the first Summer League team to ever go undefeated comes next Tuesday as they face Castle Grayskull, who’s on their own 7-game win streak.
In Men’s League, Yellowbeard (4-3) inched closer to the #2 seed. They won 17-8 last night over Blue Velvet (4-3-1). So now, if Gang Green loses next Wednesday to Black Monday – who’s on a 3-game win streak – then Red vs. Yellow on Thursday would make the 4th consecutive week that Red plays a 1v2 contest.
Tonight’s action: Solid Gold (5-2) is itching to remain in the group of elite teams when they face Jerry Brown (2-5). Whitesnake (3-4) and Garfield Orange (3-4) ensure that unless the lights go out early, one of this week’s five 3-4 teams will get a win.
8/2 – Jerry Brown (3-5) Friday won 13-12 against Solid Gold (5-3) in a rare upset this year in Co-ed. And Garfield Orange (4-4) was the only one of the five 3-4 teams last week to win when they spanked Whitesnake (3-5) 15-7. Orange is now trending well winning 4 of their last 5 games after starting the season 0-3.
Tonight’s action: It’s still all in Co-ed, where it will stay the first two days of this week. Whitesnake (3-5) plays Green Slime (1-7). Jerry Brown (3-5) faces Forest Moon of Endor (2-6). And in Venice, Garfield Orange (4-4) has a chance to go above .500 for the first time when they take on Solid Gold (5-3).
8/3 – Did I call 15-7 a spanking? 15-2, now THAT’S a spanking. My bad. Last night Jerry Brown (4-5) laid down a whooping on Forest Moon of Endor (2-7) 15-2, which is the most lop-sided score this year.
In the other Co-ed games – at Balboa, Whitesnake (4-5) defeated Green Slime (1-8) 15-10. And in Venice, Solid Gold (6-3) took down Garfield Orange (4-5) 15-7.
Tonight’s action: This could be THE contest of the season. Dexy’s Midnight Runners (8-0), gunning to be the first ever undefeated team in Summer League history, plays two-time defending champions Seth and AJ of Castle Grayskull (7-1). What more do I need to do to hype this match-up? Well, once again, here’s ten things to know about this game. My apologies for skewing a little towards Grey, since I already told you several things about Midnight two weeks ago when they played Pink.
1) No Summer League captains have ever won three tournaments in a row, which is what Seth and AJ are striving for this year. So pretty impressive if they can pull off the hat trick.
2) Let’s see, has any big news happened to Midnight since their game against Pink? Um….. gee…. I wonder….. oh wait, maybe THIS would count. Frankie and Tracy gave birth to Sienna Elsa Rho on July 25th!!! Frankie is already grooming her i.o. break mark flick.
3) Grey’s Sarah VanWagenen left Israel early to come play in this game. That might be a slight exaggeration, but only slight.
4) Know your Slow Children players, part 2. (In part 1, I told you about Pink’s Jim Klimek.) Grey’s Tim Dulaney is a beast in the air, and one of the fastest players out there. The AJ to Tim huck connection has been one of Grey’s biggest advantages this summer.
5) This game features the battle of Hellions. Grey has 3 USC women’s players: Bubbles, Banshee and Tails. Midnight has four: Frosty, Jaws, Broccoli and former Hellion Swift Balls.
6) At 18 years of age, Midnight’s Jennifer “Frosty” Chang was actually the youngest player in the draft.
7) The two oldest females in the draft are also in this game, but no need to name names.
8 ) Seth and AJ used to play pick-up basketball at Marshall high school, but Seth kept breaking his fingers, so they switched to ultimate, and that’s how the Marshall pick-up game began that eventually led to the 2008 Winter League champs some ten years later. What? I’m just saying…
9) Speaking of Winter League, Grey’s Jeff Landesman and Laura Wheeler have an interesting fact. In the last 12 years, 3 teams have won Winter League 3 times. Quake, Damn, and Empire. Jeff and Laura played for all three teams. Not bad guys.
10) In case you haven’t been following along, there will be only two first round byes in Co-ed, so a loss for Grey could push them out of that first round bye.
In the undercard, Red M&M’s (6-2) plays The Color Purple (3-5).
8/4 – Destiny is almost upon us!
Dexy’s Midnight Runners (9-0) took one step closer to immortality by slaying the number 2 seeded Castle Grayskull (7-2) by a score of 15-11. (SEE 8/3 RECAP BY FRANKIE RHO).
Now, here’s a point of clarification. I’ve been saying no team has gone undefeated in Summer League history, but what I really should be saying is no team has won every game. Because in 2003, (as I recently discovered by using a webpage archive mechanism to find those lost standings that don’t show up on the 2003 page anymore) Ice Gray went 8-0-1, so technically they were also undefeated. But no team has won all their games, so that is what Midnight is trying to be the first team to do.
Up next for Midnight is Red M&M’s (7-2) on Monday, who will not be pushed over. They won their game last night 15-10 over The Color Purple (3-6). This from Red captain Chad Woodard:
Red threw zone on the very first pull and almost came away with a callahan. Instead, Purple caught the deflection and worked it up the field on about 200 throws and struck first. Each team held the lead twice and it was 7s before Red took half. There was a good mix of zone and man from both sides, but Red took it 15-10.
Tonight’s action: Men’s League has an intriguing match-up tonight in Black Monday (3-5) vs. Gang Green (4-2-1). Black started the season 0-5, but has won 3 straight. This will be a big test for them because those 3 wins came against the bottom half of the bracket, while Green is the #2 seed. Now, if Green loses, they would fall below Yellow, who would become the new #2 seed, and that would set up the 4th straight week of 1v2 in Men’s League tomorrow. And what’s stunning is Yellow would be the 4th different #2 seeded opponent to face Red.
In Co-ed, Bullet the Blue Sky (3-5) takes on Royal Wedding (3-5).
8/5 – I swear, it’s like the teams are purposely winning or losing in order to give me fun stuff to write about.
Black Monday’s (4-5) 17-13 win last night over Gang Green (4-3-1) in Men’s League accomplished two things. Most importantly, it set up the 4th straight week of a 1v2 match-up tonight when Red plays Yellow. More on that below. Secondly, it gives Black 4 straight wins after starting the season 0-5. If they win their final two games against Yellow and Blue, they will become the first Summer League team in history to start the season 0-5 and end with a winning record. You know how I know that? Because I looked it up last year when Soylent Green of Co-ed tried to do the same thing. They made it to 5-5 before losing their last game of the season, and ended 5-6. Can Black do it this year? Meanwhile, here’s a little recap of last night’s game from Black captain Rhett Nichols:
Green took the first few points, Black stormed back and made it 8-4. Green added a few before Black took half at 9-6. After that it was a bit of a blur, the teams traded points for a bit and Black went on a mini-run to make it 15-10. (at least i believe that was the score) Green answered and scored two straight forcing Black to call a timeout at 15-12 to regroup. The Black team scored two of the last three points to close it out at 17-13.
In the Co-ed game, Bullet the Blue Sky (4-5) won 15-10 over Royal Wedding (3-6). There’s a whole lot of teams bunched together around 4-5 and 3-6 meaning the tournament match-ups are still nearly impossible to predict at this late point in the season. (Starting Monday, I’ll list the potential tourney match-ups, like I do every year.)
Tonight’s action: Okay, here’s the thing. In case you haven’t been following along, Simply Red (7-1) plays Yellowbeard (4-3) tonight in a match-up of the #1 and #2 seeds. What makes this so amazing is it’s the 4th straight week that Simply Red has played in a 1v2 game. AND it’s the 4th different opponent.
In week 6, Purple Rain was the 2 seed, and Red won 18-16.
In week 7, Blue Velvet moved to the #2 spot, and Red smoked them 17-5.
Last week, Gang Green worked their way to #2, and Red won in convincing fashion, 17-9.
This week, it’s Yellowbeard getting the honors.
Now, the research it would take me to figure out if this has ever happened before would exceed even my own insane levels of blowing off work at my job. So I’m going to go out on a very long and sturdy limb (really, a thick branch) and say, it’s never happened before.
I don’t have 10 facts for you about this game. So instead I’ll give you 5 interesting facts about the Yellow team.
1) Captains Ben Cohen and Drumline were members of the C Division Winter League champs The Abominable Snowmen, and drafted four other players from that team: Brady Vandegrift, Bryan Edwards, Jacob Weiss and Tim Shrout. And now this team is in 2nd place. Perhaps the Snowmen need to be moved up to B Division next year.
2) Chris “Toph” Eggers is the brother of writer Dave Eggers, most known for the best selling “A Heartbreaking Work of a Staggering Genius”, and the screenwriter of “Away We Go” and “Where the Wild Things Are”.
3) Darren Janger was the 2006 winner of the Summer League on-line poker tournament hosted by Ultimatebet.com.
4) Ben Brin is the LAOUT Youth Coordinator and ran for a coordinator position on the UPA last fall.
5) Yellow leads Men’s League in most nicknames. 12 of the 18 players submitted a nickname for the draft. 2 more than the next closest team.
By the way, no matter what happens this week, there will not be a 5th straight 1v2 game, because Red plays White Zombie, and there’s no way White can move up to the 2 seed by next week.
In the undercard, Pretty in Pink (7-1) continues their run for the first round bye with a game against Joan Jett & the Blackhearts (1-7) in Co-ed.
8/9 – Alright, let’s catch you up with everything that’s happened at the end of last week.
Thursday’s games: In Co-ed, Pretty in Pink (8-1) moved one step closer to locking up a first round bye with a 15-5 win over Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (1-8). This from Pink captain b-saus.
Pink had nearly a full squad, black had a few subs. Black scored first, but minus Sam/Tai for the honeymoon and with limited subs, Pink used fresh legs and tough D to control the game the rest of the way.
Highlights… Jim Klimek and Dan Miller with some sweet D’s. Simon getting a callahan even though he didn’t want to play zone. Ivan’s full field huck to Jesse Greenberg to break the zone.
In the Men’s League game, Simply Red (8-1) won their 4th straight game against a #2 seed, defeating Yellowbeard (4-4). Red now has a 3 game lead on the next closest team, and since the side of the bracket with the 1 seed gets the first round bye, it is now officially falling on Red’s side.
From Ben Cohen: It was a close game, tied 7-7 before Red made a break away and stayed up by two points for most of the game, at times Yellow got within one, but could not get passed Red’s speed and handling. End score was 17-14 red.
Milhouse added that Chris Eggers’ breakmark hucks could not be stopped. He hasn’t been that unstoppable since the ’08 Sectionals. The hipster Filipino guy with glasses was also pretty hard to contain.
Friday’s games: Both Men’s League. With captain George Van Pelt back from Africa, White Zombie (2-7) finally ended their losing streak, winning 17-12 over Blue Velvet (4-4-1).
In the Ice Cube (4-5) vs. Purple Rain (4-5) contest, it was a good old fashioned barn burner.
From Ice captain Mike Dow: Ice Cube beat Purple 19-18. Rare self props to me, Mark Miller and Collin who played all 37 points, which has to be some kind of record. After some research my proposed nicknames for playing the maximum number of points in a mens summer league game is either:
An Artest (his number)
A Rubidium (elements atomic number)
A Shakespeare (37 is the number of plays he wrote. I like this one because it’s artistic.)
A Cool Hand Luke )Paul Newman’s inmate number in Cool Hand Luke)
I think this should be a poll on the summer league site.
- Mike
You got it Mike. I’ve added it in.
Tonight’s action: Dexy’s Midnight Runners (9-0) can officially lock up a first round bye tonight with a win against Red M&M’s (7-2). And yes, if you read Alex’s post, and saw the new Standings History link I created, you know that indeed a team went undefeated in Spring League in 1998. So Midnight would not be the first undefeated team in league history. They would still be the first undefeated team in SUMMER League history though, so that’s gotta be worth something, right?
Whitesnake (4-5) also takes on Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (1-8) and in Venice, Bullet the Blue Sky (4-5) faces Castle Grayskull (7-2).
8/10 – History has one more hurdle. But the penultimate hurdle might have been the biggest.
Dexys Midnight Runners (10-0) beat Red M&M’s (7-3) last night 17-16 in an epic battle that easily could’ve gone either way. Red had the disc at 16′s right near the goal line, and an errant pass that Bacon almost scooped up cost Red the victory, as Midnight marched it down the field to win the game.
Here’s an interesting point of fact, by the way. Last week Ice played Purple in Men’s to a 19-18 win, and last night with Midnight’s 17-16 win over Red in Co-ed, both games ignored the official Summer League rules on hard cap. If you go into the S.L. page and click on Rules, you’ll see how Men’s League games get capped at 20, and Co-ed gets capped at 18. Oh well, what are rules anyway?
Anyway, with the victory, Midnight is now one win away from being the only Summer League team ever to win all their games (yes, there were two very subtle qualifiers in that sentence). Their last game is Tuesday, August 17 against Whitesnake.
Also, Midnight clinches a 1st round bye with the win.
Whitesnake (5-5) meanwhile played Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (1-9) last night in a game of “what happens when both teams’ top 3 picks don’t show up?” The answer: White wins 15-11.
And in Venice, Castle Grayskull (8-2) kept the pressure on Pink for that second 1st round bye as they beat Bullet the Blue Sky (4-6) 15-9.
Tonight’s action: In Co-ed, Pretty in Pink (8-1) tries to move one step closer to that 1st round bye when they take on Green Slime (1-8) tonight.
In Men’s, Blue Velvet (4-4-1) and Purple Rain (4-5) were both once the #2 seed, but they have both fallen on hard times as of late, and hope to right the ship for the stretch drive into the tournament.
8/11 – The re-emergence of Purple? Or is Blue just fading faster than M. Night Shyamalan’s directing skills?
Purple Rain (5-5) had been in a tailspin in Men’s League. After starting the season 4-1, they dropped four straight games and showed no sign of hope. But last night they looked amazing en route to a 17-6 slashing of Blue Velvet (4-5-1). It certainly begs the question, are they back? Or is it simply that Blue is the new Purple? Last time these two teams met Purple eeked out a 17-15 win. But Blue, who themselves opened the season 4-1, has not won in 5 straight games.
As it stands today, these two teams would play eachother in the opening round of the tournament. But of course, a lot can change in a week.
In Co-ed, Pretty in Pink (9-1) now stands on the verge of bye-dom. Their 15-9 win over Green Slime (1-9) means that a win or tie in the last week of the season, OR a Grey loss or tie, would give them a 1st round bye.
This from Pink captain b-saus: Green came out with the first point as Spaz hit a wide open someone, who Pink decided not to guard, with an (awesome) huck. Strong D by Green, inspired by Max Kleinman’s lay out bids (not sure if he got any, but he laid out a lot… including through the end zone mud puddle), kept the first half close. Pink came out strong in the second half, scoring the first three to build an 11 – 6 lead, and then basically held on from there.
Tonight’s action: Simply Red (8-1), the top seed, plays White Zombie (2-7), the bottom seed. Red win you say? Not so fast. Red’s sole loss this season came at the hands of White 15-11 in week 3 in Venice. White captain George Van Pelt is back from his extended trip to South Africa, so this could be a history making game. Never has a #1 seed lost twice to a last place team in any Los Angeles league in recorded history. I looked it up.
In the other Men’s League game, Ice Cube (4-5) takes on Gang Green (4-3-1). When last these two teams met, Green bested the Cubists 17-12.
8/12 – Is it because I put up the Hall of Records page? Is that why you guys now want to create more records? I totally get it. Records are awesome.
Last night in Men’s League, a new record occurred. White Zombie (3-7) actually beat Simply Red (8-2) 17-13. It was the 2nd time that the last place seeded White took down top seeded Red, which has never happened before in any Los Angeles league in recorded history. And I live for stuff like that.
Oh also, if White wins next week against Purple, they would finish their season with 3 straight wins. No other last place Summer League team has ever won their last game of the season, much less their last three!!!
Here’s a tiny recap of the game, from a person who asked not to be identified. Ooh, mysterious!
Red had 9 players, White had 8. We traded points to 3′s. White gets a couple breaks to go up 5-3. Red comes back to tie it at 5′s. Red gets one more break and takes half 9-8. After half and after a break for white, we kept trading points to 12′s. Then White started really dial things in on defense as they took it to 16-12. We trade a couple more to finish it 17-13.
In the other Men’s League game, Gang Green (5-3-1) played Ice Cube (4-6) in a nail biter. If you want to see the results, check out Jeff Chai’s recap, which I added to the website. (SEE 8/11 RECAP BY JEFF CHAI).
Tonight’s action: In Men’s League, Black Monday (4-5) attempts to become only the second team in Summer League history to start 0-5 and come all the way back to 50%, as they take on Yellowbeard (4-4).
In Co-ed, Jerry Brown (4-5) and Royal Wedding (3-6) face off and all sorts of teams can move around seedings depending on how this one ends up.
8/13 – The theme of Thursday night harkened back to a little film starring Saturday Night Live alumni Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd. It was called “Trading Places”.
I’ll get to that in a second. First let me say…. I swear, it’s like every time I prep a game by saying “if this team wins this game, it’ll set up this cool scenario” the team in question ALWAYS wins. This season is awesome. You guys always do the thing I want you to do. And Thursday night in Men’s League, Black Monday (5-5) won their game 17-12 over Yellowbeard (4-5), which made them only the second team in Summer League history to start a season 0-5 and come all the way back to 50%. If they win next week against Blue Velvet, they’ll become the only team to ever start 0-5 and finish with a winning record. The way this season’s gone, I fully expect that to happen. But you know, no pressure.
The win means that Black has surged all the way up to the #3 seed in the league, and actually just traded places (see, I told you it was coming) with Yellow in the standings.
This is from Yellow captain Ben Cohen: Last nights game was a hard fought one. This captain showed up 10 minutes late to find Yellow playing 6 man savage against Black’s 7 (with a 10 man roster). Surprisingly the score was 1-1 with Yellow scoring the first point, a man down. At 1-1 each team finally had 7 men on the field. Black and Yellow traded points, with yellow playing tough man-on-man D, and Black throwing on a zone. Yellow was able to break Black a few times with some lofty hammers, but Black’s solid handlers kept the game even. At 5-5 Black began to break away. A mixture of some smart Black defense and some miscues by Yellow put Black up 9-6 at the half. From there Black rolled on torwards victory. At 15-10 (Black winning) Yellow decided to use what was left of their Savage energy and throw a zone on Black. They were able to muster a few points, but in the end Black’s numbers and solid puts gave them a 17-12 win. With a full squad, yellow looks forward to a rematch!
An interesting side-note: Black’s complete turnaround goes exactly the opposite of their team’s name, since Black Monday was a reference to the 1987 stock market crash. C’mon guys, respect the theme!
In Co-ed, Royal Wedding (4-6) defeated Jerry Brown (4-6) 15-11. This means that they’re both now in a three-way tie with Bullet the Blue Sky, and it was a royal (yes, pun intended) pain trying to work out the order of these three teams, since they all defeated eachother. But I stuck to the rules, and figured out that Royal and Brown merely traded places (oh, don’t you love it when it all comes full circle?)
Tonight’s action: Two games in Co-ed. And unfortunately, I have nothing interesting to say about either game. Shocking, I know. The Color Purple (3-6) vs. Garfield Orange (4-5). Forest Moon of Endor (2-7) vs. Solid Gold (6-3).
8/16 – Friday night Garfield Orange (5-5) defeated The Color Purple (3-7) 15-4, with Orange moving past White into 6th place. And Forest Moon of Endor (3-7) managed a 13-11 upset over Solid Gold (6-4)
We enter the final week of the season today. Check the Tournament link on the Summer League page for information. I’ll be finishing my updates on that today and tomorrow, but the main information is there.
Tonight’s action: Three Men’s League games. Each one has their own little piece of intrigue. First up is Simply Red (8-2) vs. Ice Cube (4-6). Still up for grabs is Red’s chance to beat the record for most games ahead of the 2nd place team. It was established by Lint Gray in 1998 at 3 games. Red currently is up by 2, but with a few things going their way, they could tie or even break that.
White Zombie (3-7) takes on Purple Rain (5-5). White is locked into the last place spot no matter what, so with a win, they would become the first ever last place team to win their final game of the season (amazingly, that’s never happened before) and they would actually have won 3 straight to end the season with a win. That’s pretty wild.
And in Venice, Gang Green (5-3-1) faces Yellowbeard (4-5) for the first of two meetings this week. They also play again on Wednesday, in a make-up of their week 5 game that was cancelled because the Parks & Recreation department forgot they had a fair scheduled at Reseda that night. It will be the first time in L.A. history that two league teams play eachother twice in the same week.
8/17 – Sadly, records were not shattered last night.
White Zombie (3-8) had a chance to be the only last place team to win their final game of the season, but it wasn’t to be. They lost 17-7 to Purple Rain (6-5). This from Purple captain James Renfroe:
In last night’s matchup between Purple and White. White only managed to field 6, and this was with holding off the start of the game for nearly 40 minutes. Once White’s sixth man showed we decided to go ahead and start the game. Purple pulled to White and it seemed like their six worked the disc back down the field just as quickly and before Purple knew it, it was 1-0. Purple then worked it down and tied it up at 1′s. Then White sort of just pimp slapped Purple and went on a 3-0 run. After this, Purple’s numbers on and off the field and their legs sort of took over the game. Purple worked it back to 4-4, then points were traded at 5-5 and then Purple went on another run to take the half at 9-5. The second half went in a similar fashion as the end of the first with Purple taking the second half 8-2. Congrats to White for playing hard and making some sick D’s and keeping the game interesting. Perhaps if things go well for us both in the tourney, we’ll meet again.
Also, although Simply Red (9-2) won last night 14-13 over Ice Cube (4-7), they can no longer break the record for most games above the 2nd place team. Regardless of whether Yellow or Green wins on Wednesday, Red will be at best 3 games ahead of the 2nd place team, good for a tie with Lint Grey from 1998 Spring League. They would need a Yellow win or tie on Wednesday to tie that record.
Speaking of Yellowbeard (5-5) and Gang Green (5-4-1), they played their first of two games this week, and Yellow took it 17-7. They play again on Wednesday in the final Men’s League game of the year.
Tonight’s action: Well, the last hurdle for Dexys Midnight Runner’s (10-0) undefeated season comes tonight against Whitesnake (5-5). If Midnight wins, they would become the only Summer League team in history to win all of their games. They’ve already locked up the #1 overall seed, so this game is purely for the record book.
In Men’s League, Black Monday (5-5) also attempts to make history by being the only team to lose their first 5 games of the season, and end with a winning record. Only Blue Velvet (4-5-1) stands in their way.
8/18 – Dust off those record books and get out an eraser. It’s time for a rewrite!!!
Ladies and gentlemen, I present you the first 11-0 team in Summer League history. Dexys Midnight Runners ran the table, with a 15-11 victory over Whitesnake (5-6). They now hold three Summer League season records. Most wins, Highest winning percentage and Most consecutive wins.
So now they’ve done it in the regular season. Can they do it in the tournament? The only other team to win every game in their season was Lint Gray in 1998 Spring League (the pre-cursor to Summer League) and they won the tournament, so history is on their side.
But wait, that wasn’t the only record to fall. In Men’s League last night Black Monday (6-5) won 17-6 over Blue Velvet (4-6-1). They have the incredible record of most losses to start the season (5) and still finish with a winning record. What on earth causes a team to start out 0-5 and then finish 6-0? I have no explanation. I’m stumped. But it definitely makes them the hottest team in Men’s going into the tournament.
Tonight’s action: Another record happens tonight, barring a sudden unexpected hurricane in Los Angeles. When Gang Green (5-4-1) plays Yellowbeard (5-5) tonight, it’ll be the first time two teams have played eachother twice in the same week. Yellow won the first one, and if they win again, it’ll give Simply Red a tie for the record of most wins over the 2nd place team (3), set by that same Lint Gray team from 1998.
In Co-ed, Pretty in Pink (9-1) has a chance to lock up a 1st round bye with either a win or a tie tonight against Garfield Orange (5-5).
And the last game is to help unmuddle the seedings of all those mid-to-low ranked teams as Forest Moon of Endor (3-7) plays Royal Wedding (4-6).
8/19 – Personally, I hate ties. They’re boring like a PBS pledge drive. I mean, what is this, freakin’ fútbol? The Vietnam War? Even hockey blitzkrieged the tie game in the late aughts. But I will say this. Ties make it a lot easier to sort out the seedings.
So last night Royal Wedding (4-6-1) and Forest Moon of Endor (3-7-1) ended their seasons in a 15-15 tie. How unsatisfying? I need a Snickers bar. They did, however, write a recap of the game from both sides, and you can read that by clicking on this Summer League picture that you must be sick to death of by now, and then find the recap. (SEE 8/18 RECAP BY STEVE MCDONELL)
Okay, I’m spitting out that bitter pill now. On to more exciting things. Like Pretty in Pink’s (10-1) 15-11 win over Garfield Orange (5-6). The win locks Pink into the 2nd seed, and with that, a first round bye. Holla!
And the Men’s League regular season officially comes to an end with Yellowbeard’s (6-5) 17-12 victory over Gang Green (5-5-1). What a crazy season Men’s League was. Two of the better teams in the first half, Blue and Green, folded like an origami necktie down the stretch. While Black and Yellow were kicked around early on, but became forces at the end to finish 2/3 in the standings.
From Yellow helmer Ben Cohen: “Oh what an epic game! Coming into Wednesday Nights game Yellow had a bit of a chip on their shoulder after beating Green on Monday. But Green game out strong, after trading the first few points (4-4) Green broke away and took the half 9-5. Yellow was frustrated but would not give in. The second half began with strong defense from Yellow, as they picked away at Green’s lead. Yellow tied the game at 10-10 caped off at 17-12 win with a 12 to 3 run to end the game. But don’t count Green out, they will be a force to recon with at the tournament.”
With Green’s loss, Simply Red officially tied the record for most wins over the 2nd place team (3). And I forgot to mention earlier in the week that White Zombie tied the record for most wins by a last place team (also 3).
Tonight’s action: It doesn’t get any better than this. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (1-9) plays Green Slime (1-9) in the battle royale for “who gets to not be in last place.” In theory, somebody will win. The loser will tie the record for most games back of first place (10). There’s always a record.
In the other game, Solid Gold (6-4) faces The Color Purple (3-7).
8/20 – Today is the final day of Summer League. I’m kinda sad, I’m not gonna lie. It’s been a great year.
Last night two Co-ed games were played, but it didn’t affect the standings at all.
Green Slime (2-9) won the battle for not finishing in last place, winning 14-11 over Joan Jett & the Blackhearts (1-10), who now have tied the dubious record of most games back of first place (10).
Solid Gold (7-4) beat the Color Purple (3-8) 15-8.
Check out the Men’s tournament preview I wrote in the Features section. And the much better Co-ed preview written by Chad Woodard.
Tonight’s action: This is it folks. Summer League ends with two final Co-ed games.
Jerry Brown (4-6) faces Castle Grayskull (8-2) and Red M&M’s (7-3) plays Bullet the Blue Sky (4-6). There’s a few spots still left to move around with these two games. I’m gonna head out to the fields tonight, so I can immediately update the website tonight, and you’ll all know the final seedings ASAP.
I totally forgot about Gabe punching the ground.
I’ve definitely learned my lesson. Carry the Nalgene with my left hand. And land on my left side when laying out.
where does the tournament played?! is tonight’s game to be in Encino CA?
