WEDNESDAY NIGHT IN SUMMER LEAGUE

Written by Andy Bandit

Last night was a tough situation to spectate with both games really tight. At one point in the 2nd half, both games were tied with exactly the same score. Did I say tough situation? I meant AWESOME situation.

It was the best of disc. It was the worst of disc. The only two undefeated teams in Men’s played eachother last night with Blaxploitation taking on the Pol Pot Brownies. This game had all the makings of an Australian rugby match. I counted six collisions in the first half alone. And I’m not talking the Care Bears bouncing off eachother trying to get away from Professor Coldheart and Frostbite. (Um…my niece watches it.) No, I’m talking NFL wide receivers doing crossing patterns and getting knocked on their ass from inside linebackers. I seriously thought about getting an ambulance on call. On one point alone there were three nasty collisions, two involving Atilla. ….. The game started with a Brown callahan. And then the lead changed a couple times with Black taking half 9-8 on a Carl Edwards huck to Tigger. But a Penguin layout score tied it at 9’s. At 10-9 there was the 15 minute point, which included a time-out and two more stoppages due to injuries. (Did I not mention the rugby part?) Jerry Porter got a sick layout D on a little five-foot backhand pass to the endzone, and it was back to tied at 10’s. After a score, Brown then slapped on their first zone of the game, and caused a quick turnover near the end zone for an easy 12-10 lead, but Black wised up and methodically broke the next zone to bring it to 12-11. Two more Brown scores, including Toph’s great over-the-top pass to Aho made it 14-11. Cookie followed with a hand-blocked cross-field forehand that found Tigger on a great leap right on the opposite line to make it 14-12. Both sides scored, and when Trogdor sent a 40 yard huck to Toph who skied two defenders to make it 16-13 with five minutes left, it was essentially over. Black scored one last time, but the lights mercifully went out to end the grudge match 16-14 Brown, now the last remaining undefeated team in Men’s at 3-0. ….. Between the craziness of the multiple collisions, there was some fun stuff to enjoy, including watching Cookie, channeling the great Nolan Ryan, zinging 100 mph hammers past his receivers. All that was absent was the ump yelling steeee-rike three after each miss.

You can’t keep an insane man down. Frankie Rho of Aqualung, just one week from dislocating his shoulder and asking me to find a replacement for him, returned to the field, playing left-handed, and laid out for a disc 10 feet out of bounds, causing the entire sidelines to cringe, and then bounced back up again and hustled on D. And nothing in that sentence should surprise anyone. ….. This game looked like it might become an easy win for A Clockwork Orange. They jumped out to a 5-2 lead and took half 8-5 and just looked like they were the stronger team. Playing with only two subs to start the game, they learn the mistakes from last week’s game against Green by improving their zone offense. As Spada whispered to me on the sideline in his best Happy Gilmore voice, “Someone learned to play zone.” But Aqua chipped away at the lead and tied it at 10-10 on a pretty Chad Woodard pass to Amila Ferron in the back on the zone. The teams traded points and then Aqua took a 13-11 lead on Chad’s up the line 15-yarder to Bryanne Knight. But back came Orange, tying it at 13’s, capped by Randy Roberts, on stall 8, showing vision rivaled only by Charles McKeown’s Adolphus from the Adventures of Baron Munchausen (that’s right, I’m not afraid to go obscure) to find Mike Bell on the far side with a majestic backhand. Aqua got the lead back at 14-13 despite a comical lay-out attempt by Spada on the mark, belly-flopping like a trained harbor seal. Randy sent a long arching huck to Nicole Copti that looked to tie the game, but Amila matched her stride for stride and got the D on a sensational play. And that was the clincher as Brad Rosen found Sarah Woodard, who had several great long runs, for the final score at 15-13 Aqua. ….. My favorite moment of the game was Frankie early on, making a running catch that was questionably in bounds on the far side (what? I had great perspective), then running back about four steps to get in bounds and immediately calling a time out and dropping the disc, so noone could check feet.  That, my friends, is a Veteran move!!!
