TUESDAY NIGHT IN SUMMER LEAGUE

Written by Michael Carrier.

The night started out with an upbeat, optimistic Leland Waters captaining Silver Surfer while Mark Miller took a different approach for Blue Öyster Cult: circling up to do names. After a series of nice BOC plays highlighted by Biclops’ inches from the ground layout to save possession, Silver took a timeout down 4-1 to catch their breath and regroup; the team was playing with eight men, which quickly turned savage after Mark Dalmacio, who had been sick all day, took a turn for the worst (he would survive). This was followed by Leland’s calf tightening up, Josh Lind’s leg cramping, and, worst of all, Leland’s shoelace breaking.

The rest of the first half was much of the same: Silver made poor throws and/or poor catches which led to quick BOC conversions, often on hucks. BOC took half at 9-2 and Silver took time to talk and re-motivate.

The second half, perhaps propelled by Mark’s Willis Reed-esque return to the field, was much different for Silver. Silver started out on D by leaving your humble narrator deep and poaching off… whomever, so as not to give up the same hucks that were killing them in the first half. The strategy worked for several points, as BOC made careless mistakes almost immediately and Silver was able to convert. The rest of the half the two teams traded points, as Silver showed virtually no signs of fatigue or injury. BOC, recognizing the shift in tone in their opponents, stopped making the same silly mistakes and eventually went on to defeat Silver 17-10. In summary, the Silver Surfers eventually did indeed rise up with no fear of the reaper. The Silver offense, which seemed to center successfully around throwing hammers to Greg Sandstrom, looked as strong as ever, scoring in double digits for the second time this season. BOC, plagued much of the season by poor attendance, notched their second win. Truly a successful night for both teams.

(editor’s note: There’s no recap for the Co-ed game. The mighty Bad Bad Leroy Brown will not go undefeated this year, losing 15-11 to Pink Floyd, thanks in part to several key guys not making it to the game for Brown. In Michael Carrier’s recap of the previous game, he described the one play he was able to see on the other field.)

Ben Meyer cut deep with Scott Hills in the vicinity. The disc hung up a little long and both players jumped for it. Scott, who had position and the angle, attacked the disc with both hands. Ben also appeared to have a hand on the disc, but because of their body positions, that arm was wrapped around Scott neck. In a play that could be deemed WWE-worthy, both players landed and then fell to the ground, Scott still with two hands on the disc, Ben still with one hand on the disc and one arm putting Scott in a headlock. Somehow Scott was able to hang onto the disc and both players escaped uninjured.
