GANG GREEN vs. ICE CUBE
by Jeff Chai

As the dog days of summer roll on, it seems that the grind of playing ultimate once a week begins to wear on the human body. How else to account for the shockingly low numbers of turnouts for the Green/Ice game. Ice had 7 right up to the start of the game until Mark Miller showed up while Green had 9 for the night. I believe both sides ended up with 9 each.

In a hard fought game that was won by Green 17-15, I believe myself, Mark Miller, Mike Dow, Collin Rich and quite a few others decided to pull an Artest and play every point of the game. Ice started off with two in a row and from there it was back and forth. Realizing Collin’s massive forehand was giving us problems, we switched to a backhand force for much of the first half.

Let’s say that having been given and gone to death by Red a couple weeks back, I was definitely on my toes for any repeats. Screw you Scott Mahr. I know that in the first half, it appeared that Ice was having a much better time moving the disc whereas Green was content or rather forced to just jam it up the line. In one of the more stranger events, Sean Berman bobbled a couple wide open goals and yet when it came to those diving to the ground or contested, he exhibited T-Rho like claws.

Green took half 9-7. Straight out of half, Green took advantage of Ice’s miscues and went up 12-7 I believe. Adam Subhas has some massive lefty backhand bombs while Attila was using his pivots to get easy breaks. Ice then brought it back to 12-9, then later took the lead at 14-13 in the middle of which Collin had a great layout D. Green went on a little mini run to 16-14 after calling a time out to catch their breath and eventually closed it out.

I must admit that the whole no footblocks is definitely an adjustment and an advantage that is evident in the men’s league. With the shifty handlers having quick low pivots, the footblock or even the threat of one slows them down. Without it or even an attempted one, they’re either going to break around or if you over commit, break inside. Then once you’re on your toes, they’ll give and go. Just an interesting thought.
