What is Summer League?
Summer League is a draft league organized by the Los Angeles Organization of Ultimate Teams (LAOUT). This is LAOUT's 11th year organizing a draft league. And for the second time, there are two separate, but concurrent leagues. A Men's League and a Co-Ed League.
Does Summer League have a theme this year?
Oh yes. This year's theme is the 60's Summer League of Love, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the creation of ultimate in 1968.
Who can play?
Summer League is open to Ultimate players of all skill levels who live in the greater Los Angeles area. The leagues are "beginner friendly." All players in both leagues will receive shirts and discs.
What are the rules for playing in Men's League vs. Co-Ed League?
The Co-Ed League will have exactly the same number of men and women. It will be capped at 110 men unless more than 110 women sign up. Men who sign up after the 110th spot is taken will be placed on a waiting list in case more spots open up. The number of men allowed in the league is dictated by the number of women who sign up. The league will run 4-3 or 3-4 offense chooses.
The Men's League is open to all men, and will have no cap on the number of players allowed.
If I'm a guy, can I play in both leagues?
No. You may only play in Men's or Co-ed. If you wish to play in Co-Ed, but the cap goes on before you get your registration in, you can still play in Men's.
Are there any overlapping games between the two leagues?
No. Despite playing at the same time, and having the tournament on the same day, the two leagues are completely separate.
When and where is Summer League played?
The 11 week season begins June 2 & ends August 14. Games are played Monday - Friday nights, 8:00 - 10:30 at the Balboa Sports Complex in Encino, CA and once a week at a field TBD. Each team will play one game per week.
How do I register?
Fill out a Summer League Registration Form, available April 7 at 9AM. Submit it and pay using PayPal, or send a $46 check made out to LAOUT to the address listed on the form. Your online registration & PayPal payment must be received or your check postmarked by May 16, 2008. Late entries can only be added to teams to replace injured players, or players who drop out. PLEASE NOTE that there will be a cap on the number of men allowed in the Co-Ed League, so if you are a male, you should submit your registration as early as possible to ensure entry into the Co-Ed League.
What if I missed the deadline and still want to play?
Any players who sign up late - after the draft - can ONLY be added to teams to replace injured players, or players who drop out. Think of it as a crowded bar on Sunset. You can't get in until someone else leaves. Players may only be added to teams with the consent of the Commissioner. Don't just add ringers on your own.
Do I need to be a UPA member to play?
No. There is no UPA requirement in Summer League this year.
Can I baggage with other players?
Yes, but you may only baggage with one other player. No exceptions. I'm going to be a little stricter on baggaging this year because of the two leagues. Baggage will only be accepted under one of the following three conditions, and this is the same for people who want to captain together:
1) You have carpooling concerns.
2) You are in a committed relationship.
3) You are a veteran who is introducing a friend into playing ultimate for the first time, and they'd feel more comfortable playing with you.
So to be clear, if I'm a guy and want to baggage with my girlfriend, or female carpooling buddy, and the cap goes on for Co-Ed before I submit my registration, what happens?
In that case, you can only play in Men's League. If you want to play with a girlfriend or female carpool buddy, you MUST get your registration in early. Please don't take the gamble of procrastination.
When and where is the tournament?
The Tournament will be on Saturday, August 16 at the Field of Dreams in San Pedro, CA, the same place as last year. And check out the link for the awesome tournament after-party, the Booze Cruise.
Which edition of the UPA rules will the leagues use?
We'll use the new 11th edition rules. I'll be giving out a few rulebooks to each team captain at the draft. You can find a copy of the rules here: http://www.upa.org/ultimate/rules/11th
